My Great-grandfather, Joseph Bell's address in the 1901 census is 'Workhouse Hill, Horsforth'. The next enumerated house is 'Troy Grange', which still stands on Troy Road-- which is a hill. I cannot find Workhouse Hill on modern or older maps. In former times did Workhouse Hill occupy the upper part of what is now Troy Road? Does anyone know the location of the workhouse in Horsforth, which I believe is now a private dwelling? I'm assuming that the road where it stands was once named Workhouse Hill, either officially or unofficially. I have an old photo of the area and I believe my great-grandfather's house is shown on it.
Thanks for any help.

The parish of Horsforth belonged initially to a Gilbert Union, based at Carlton, south of Otley.
The parishes within the Carlton Gilbert Union seemed to have shared a number of small local workhouses.

Thanks for the information on the website. I have read it with interest. Unfortunately it does not allow me to pinpoint the exact location. I probably need to visit Horsforth.
Thanks again

I don't know if this link will be of any help
Old workhouse, Troy Hill -
Undated. Built of local stone, thought to have been built late 16th, early 17th century by the Craven family near to the Horsforth corn mill.........

Thanks for your kind help, Ladyhawk. I do know of this photo on Leodis. There is also a general view of the "Troy" area of Horsforth which shows the corn mill at which I believe my great-grandfather and grandfather worked. I am hoping that pinpointing where the workhouse building is situated will tell me where Workhouse Hill was/is. I now believe it is probably Troy Hill - just off Troy Road.
Thanks once again.

Though it's not named, using a combination of Dob's map and this one, you might be able to narrow down the location:

Think its still there
note:- double roof and small first floor gable end close together tiny windows within the Leeds link above posts
Coming up the shallow Troy road (hill) main road, from Station road staggered cross roads , there is a steeper dirt (hill) track road on the right opposite the modern Mill house building -go up that dirt track.

Many thanks dobfarm and Ruskie! Sorry for the delay in replying but I have been away on holiday for a couple of weeks. Your information, pinpoints where Workhouse Hill was/is.
Dobfarm, I would be interested to know where you obtained the map you posted. I have scoured the NLS site which, as you probably know, has an extensive offering of old maps, but I could not find Workhouse Hill on any.
Thanks to both once again for your invaluable help.

In the map in link
From bottom left hand corner on map.
Find the word HORSFORTH in large big BLACK Letters on the map
Above the TH in Horsforth go straight up the map to the first horizontal faint dotted line: then compare map with the one map I posted.
