According to FreeReg, Richard was single of Helmingham. Mary HYNDES, single. Witnesses Edmund HYNDES and Jenney HYNDES. There is a note on the records saying: "Lic. Note stating Richard Dove age 92 was residing in Cretingham in 1840. SRO Fiche 3"

Ah - well spotted.  I thought I had combed freeREG
Richard Dove died aged 92 in February 1841 - sounds as if he was quite well known in those parts!

Many thanks.  Joan

Your welcome Joan, looks like good coverage of that area on Free Reg.  ;)

(Interesting family - I wonder why he named his child to Margaret Glanfield - "Richard Hindes DOVE", after Mary had died 8 years previous? Or that's what it looks like on a very quick scan of the Richard DOVE records that came up on the search I did.)

Richard Hindes Dove was the grandson of Richard Dove & Mary Hindes.  Richard Dove(jnr) married Margaret Glanfield in October & Richard Hindes Dove was born that December.....

I haven't found any evidence that Richard Dove (d 1841 - there were a stream of Richards) remarried after Mary's death.  When I've a minute I'm going to check local newspapers via FindMyPast.

Interestingly, this is my first 'DNA success' - DNA testing showed a link btween my Cretingham Doves and the Dove family of Debenham which I've only just been able to track down. Earlier Doves were apparantly born at Otley and Wetheringsett, neither of which parshes are covered by the brilliant FreeREG.

Oh that makes sense, I only had a verrry quick scan through the records and obviously didn't pay enough attention to the dates!

Must admit to not knowing much about DNA testing, but am surprised it can give that level of detail. Nice to hear of your success story.  :D

Hi, If you are interested in Samuel Dove of Debenham, probably linked to your family, he kept a diary, a copy which is on sale on Amazon for £8-99. His house is adjacent to the church and is now used as a meeting centre /exhibition hall for the villagers. Kettleburger.

I would be most interested in looking at Samuel Dove of Debenham's diary, so thank you for that lead.

I have linked my Dove's back to Cretlingham & Debenham, but not to Samuel Dove's branch - I cannot find the point of contact between the familis. It must be there both geographically and because the name groupings are the same - names such as Edward, Samuel, Richard and particularly the much rarer 'Lionel', together with Lydia, Sarah & Elizabeth on th female side.

All the best

Joan
