Master mariner Daniel Toft. He died in Russia in 1848. Where was he born? Nothing conclusive as yet Would appreciate any advice or help
-
How old was he when he died in 1848? Did he have a wife and children & if so what are their details?
-
There are several merchant seaman records for men named Daniel Toft - birthdates ranging from about 1792-1820, all apparently born in Sunderland. Is he one of them?

Marriage notice Jan 1846 for Robert Proctor jnr butcher to Mary Toft eldest daughter of Daniel Toft master mariner.
1851 census Robert Proctor 30 butcher, wife Mary 26, and living with he mary Toft described as mother but actually mil age 56 master mariner widow and Jane Toft sister 21.
Looks like a contender, so only need to find unmarried Mary jnr, Mary the mother and sister Jane in 1841

In 1841 the family are in Sunderland but without Daniel (ot uat sea?). There is also a son Thomas age 14 in 1841 apprentice shipwright. All born in county

It is possible Mary the mother was Mary Elder who married Daniel Toft at Bishop Wearmouth on 11 Aug 1816. Mary's year of birth about 1795, so her Daniel likely to be the one born about 1792 on seamen records. It says his birthplace is Sunderland

If one of the children was a Thomas Toft, born 1826 Sunderland, he became a master as well and there are three images free online detailing his voyages in National Archives file BT 124.

At least two more free online records for master mariner Daniel Toft of Sunderland BUT I searched only for the spelling "Toft". There may be others if you try all the phonetic variations of the name in the Shipmaster database.
