Hi I am trying to find the parents of William Butchers He was b.1825 Mountfield.
I have looked in the IGI and VRI and cannot find him.
He got married in1851 so would probably with his wife who I have details on.
Maybe he is in the 1841 census he would have been abt 15.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Sue.

Hi Susie,
It's always helpful to give as much information as possible
I assume you don't have William's marriage certificate or you would know his father's name. However, if you will give me his wife's name I can search for their marriage, then we can go on from there.
Cheers

Hi mobo
No I do not have his marriage certificate
His wifes name was Miriam Susanna Hilder on the free BDM the marriage was Battle 1851
Is that all the info you need
Thanks Sue

Hi mobo
No he did not marry twice we think that was a misprint in transcribing
in 1871 It is Miriam and the same in 1881 census
It seems very unlikley he would marry in 1851 divorce and then marry the same person in 1861 Mind you stranger things have happened ;D
-
:D :D :D
Okay, here is their marriage record
William BUTCHER married
Miriam Susannah HILDER
in 1851 in Battle
March Quarter 7 307
You will have to order a copy of their marriage certificate, which you can do online at
www.1837online.com
quoting all the information above
it will cost £7.00 (or equivalent in dollars) and will take about a week to arrive.
This will give you William's father's name, which will help you find his birth and parents' marriage, which in turn will pinpoint the family on Census Returns.
Happy hunting !!

Thank Mobo
Would he be in the 1841 census living with his parents I do not want to get his certificate just yet as being in Australia it costs me more with the exchange but I will if I have to I will.
You have been very helpful thank you

Susie,
I don't think I explained myself sufficiently - In order to find out who his parents were - you first have to get a copy of his marriage certificate, otherwise you won't be able to tie him up to the right BUTCHER family in Sussex (it's a very common name you know)
So, I'm afraid you'll just have to 'bite the bullet' and buy one if you really want to find his parents.
:D :D
-
Thanks Mobo.
I forget somtimes about names being common. So I will bite the bullet and maybe I can on from there.
Thanks again kind regards
Sue ;D :)

Great !!
Let me know when you get the Certificate, and I'll do some further searches for you
Cheers

Hi Sue
Going back to your original question:-
Maybe he is in the 1841 census he would have been abt 15.
I have checked the 1841 census for Whatlington, Mountfield, Battle, Brightling, Dallington, Penhurst and Ashburnham and although there was 1 entry for Butcher and 7 for Butchers, none of them were aged 15/16 and named William
Sorry to be negative

hi Sue
You probably have this info, but just in case
1851 Census
HO107/ 1636/ Folio 293/ Page 9 - Address not given, Mountfield
BUTCHERS William, Head, Marr, 24, Ag Lab, born Mountfield
................ Miriam, Wife, Marr, 19, Ag Lab, born Brightling
This is one of only 3 entries, (the heads of the other two families were Stephen and William, both in Mountfield) so the name was not so common in 1851 as was thought

Chris,
Welcome back. I hope that you had a good vacation.
Could you post the census information for the other two Butchers families (Stephen and William) in Mountfield?
Thanks

Hi Chris and welcome back from me also.
While you were away I purchased the 1841 census for Sussex.
I could not find a 15 year old William either.
I found a William age 11 living on a farm with John Shorter and family.
The problem with William is his age differs in all the census from 1861 on so I am going to have to get his marriage certificate and find out who his father was and how old he is.
I also found your 1851 William Butchers with wife ann in the 1841 census hoping my william was there but he is not. They had two more children then one I cannot read age 5 months and Ann 15
Thanks for trying anyway.
Hi mark
I posted you a pm on the William Butchers and Ann in the 1841 census did you get it.
I also found a few Sellens family one was Walter did you get that one.
I have two more sellens family if you want them.
I was in the Kent section the other day and noticed you were looking for Apps.
I found a couple of families of them and I can post them on that section for you if you are interested. These are all 1841 census.
Thank you both again
Regards
Sue
