Title: sanderson
Post by: asp1 on Monday 26 September 16 21:38 BST (UK)
Can anyone help I am trying to trace a birth or marriage for Marjorie M Sanderson born Thornaby 1905/6. The marriage would have taken place in Thornaby or possibly Middlesbrough. I have details of her on the 1911 census but cannot trace an exact birth or anything else for her.

Have you found a marriage for her parents, using the information from the 1911 census?

I can't find her in 1911  - is she a daughter?  Could she have been adopted and have a different "birth" name.

There's a Marjorie M marriage in Halifax Sep 1922 - spouse Walter Copley although likely death for her gives a birth year of 1899 so  :(

Chempot yes that's the family 1901.  In 1911 census her name is spelt Margery. I have traced all the information regarding the parents and brothers and sisters but can't find anything for Marjorie other than she was still living in 1957 when her mother died as she is mentioned in the death notice as daughter Madge.  Baptism records list all the siblings but not Marjorie. Its a real mystery.

So living unmarried in 1957, in this country, or possibly elsewhere, and called Madge?

Not sure whether she was married at that time as the mother's death notice only has the daughters Christian names but no surnames or mention of sons in law and I have marriage details for the sisters.  I have tried finding a death for Marjorie as being unmarried but again have drawn a blank.  I am running out of ideas of where to search. Do you know if the St Catherines index would help.

A Marjorie M Sanderson married Percy Cordery in Wandsworth, 1934.

What I think is the same Percy is on the 1939 and says he is married but no wife is present & he appears to be living with other family members.  The two children are not his.

There are three Cordery/Sanderson births in Wandsworth but I cant find any of them on the 1939.  Percy is on later Electoral Rolls, but still no Marjorie.  The three children are easily traceable but Marjorie just seems to disappear after the birth of the last child.

A private member on Ancestry appears to have researched this family so may be able to confirm whether this is the Marjorie M Sanderson you're looking for.

Could Marjorie still be alive, as showing on free electoral role on an unspecified year in Allnutt Way?

Added:
No, she would be 110.

Probably not the Marjorie who married Percy Cordery, unless she's being economical with her age

Marjorie Maud Cordery
Birth    9 Dec 1913
Death     Jun 1992
Age       78

This could be a possibility

Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough 14th October 1940

Scouting and Guiding were represented at The Avenue Wesley Church Middlesbrough, today, for the wedding of Miss Marjorie Sanderson, of Middlesbrough, and Gunner Aubrey William Bowyer, of the Royal Artillery.
The bride and her sister Irene, who was bridesmaid, have both belonged to The Avenue Guide Company, and their brothers, Aircraftman John, and Corporal Ronald Sanderson, of the RAF., who acted as best man and groomsman, have both been Rover Scouts, with two younger brothers, Raymond and Herbert as Scouts.
Miss Sanderson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Percy Sanderson, of Middlesbrough.

There is a photo of them the next day (15 Oct 1940) in the Gazette

I'd already looked at that one and whilst not impossible, Aubrey's date of birth is 05 Aug 1918, which would make him considerably younger that the Marjorie we're looking for.  Also her father was Tom.

I'd noticed earlier that in 1881 Tom lived on the same street as my Great Grandad and was a similar age - I wonder if that's who used to cut his hair?  ;D

Is this her?

Marjorie Sanderson
born 1905
baptized 19.3.1905 Hartlepool
Par. Thomas William and Annie Eliza.

I can see she is with Elizabeth  in the 1911 census and her mother is from Hartlepool.

If Tom is a barber them forget the baptism in Hartlepool, I have found them on the 1911 census still in Hartlepool. Do you have the names of the mother and brothers and sisters?

There is a member on Ancestry who says they are married to one of Tom Sanderson's Great Grandson's - perhaps they can assist?

After a day at the Teesside Archives still no further forward.  The Marjorie born Hartlepool is not her as she died in 1909.  Checked various marriages including the one to Reg Smith again no joy. Running out of options but thanks to everyone for their input.

Were you able to check school records while you were there? I believe that many of the school admission registers are still closed under the 100-year rule, but if you can work out the most likely school(s) then the archivists may be able to do the search on your behalf.  This should at least give you a date of birth, from which you can then search the 1939 register.

The assistant at the archives did try the school index but could not trace Marjorie or any siblings. The list at the moment is very limited with only certain schools available so that doesn't help. She did try her best but also seemed at a loss to what steps to take next.

Very odd that there's no trace of her birth  ???

The only other vague possibility I can come up with is the marriage in Scarborough in 1929 between Madge Sanderson & Donald C. Hartley  :-\

There were two births in Hartlepool. One in 1905 and one in 1909. The one in 1909 died in 1909 but not the one in 1905, parents Thomas William and Annie Eliza who were still in Hartlepool 1911.

Possibly the Margaret Sanderson b 1905 Hull, living in Sculcoates in 1911.  She has an older sister who may also have married in Scarborough.

Sorry for the delay in replying to everyone. The Marjorie born 1905 in Hartlepool died 1909 she is not on the 1911 census with the family and they have added a second child called Margery    9months old.  Regarding Marjorie living Sculcoates with the sister married in Scarborough. I have traced all the siblings marriages for the Marjorie I am seeking and they all married in Thornaby or Middlesbrough.  The fact Madge turns up as Margaret is interesting. I do not know what Marjorie's middle name is, just M. perhaps its Margaret.  Will try anything at the moment.
