Hello,
I am researching the family of Robert Glass who was born in Lurgan about 1830's. He moved to Portadown and then established a linen business in Belfast in 1878. His eldest son, Henry Matier Glass, was born in 1875. Henry had 2 daughters, Mabel & Sheila Glass. If anyone knows of any connections to this family I would be grateful to hear from them please.
Many thanks,
Michael.

We aren't allowed to post details of living people and you haven't mentioned when (or who) Henry might have married :-\
Is this Henry Matier Glass in 1901 and 1911?
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Cromac/Cromwell_Road/968844
lots of siblings mentioned. Are you only interested in Henry and his descendants?
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Clifton_Ward/Antrim_Road/170685
still single in 1911 and I can't see a marriage on Emerald Ancestors free search
Glass Henry Matier of Ardlui Cranley Road Guildford Surrey died 8 February 1947 Probate London 9 June 1947 to Francis Ivan Carter solicitor. Effects in Northern Ireland £3937 10s. Re-sealed at Belfast 30 November.
Lived in England so would the marriage and births of children be there also?
-
Thank you very much Aghadowey for that prompt reply.
I am actually looking to make contact with any living relative that is descended from Robert Glass. Henry had just the 2 daughters and they had no off-spring. So Henry's line ended in South Africa in 1989.
I have been unsuccessful in locating any descendant of Robert in Northern Ireland.
Thank you
Michael.

Hello Aghadowey,
Yes, that is indeed the same family. My apologies for not confirming in my first reply.
William was killed 23 April 1917.
As far as I can determine, Maria was still alive and single in 1911 and a Governess to the McConnell family.
If there is a way to discover if the remaining 4 children had off-spring then I would like to link them with Henry Matier Glass.
thank you,
Michael.
-
In reply #3 I gave link to Maria as governess in 1911 census.
If I've found the correct William Glass in 1911 census (see also link in reply #3) then he had a wife and at least one child.
Administration (with the Will) of the Estate of William Glass late of Barule Parkmount Road Belfast Second Lieutenant 6th Royal Highlanders who died 23 April 1917 in France granted at Belfast to Henry M. Glass Manager. (Limited)
PRONI will have the Will and admistration paperwork which should indicate if he was survived by wife and legitimate child(ren) or siblings.

Hello again,
Gosh, you are really moving rapidly here !!
You are 100% correct that William was married to Harriet. They had 4 sons and moved to the Isle of Man when WW1 broke out.
You are also correct that the death notice for Robert is Henry & William's father who died in 1887.
Likewise, that is a daughter of Henry M. & Harriet that died in 1909 aged one day.
You have uncovered the still born death of a son in 1919 that I was unaware of. Thank you very much for that Aghadowey. They had just moved back into Belfast in 1919 from Whitehead where they lived during WW1. 'Cedars' was the name of the house and it was in the Knock area of Belfast.
Henry Matier Glass was the General Manager of Workman Clark, shipbuilders during WW1.
Thank you again. You are terrific.
Michael.

I would be much quicker if I wasn't 5000 miles from home ;)

Seems as though there was also a son Robert and estate wasn't sorted out until date of grant (19 July 1895- possibly due to children being minors when he died?)

Oh gosh,
For someone that is so distant, you have access to some amazing information. Thank you.
Undoubtedly, we are on the same wavelength as regards the same Glass family.
My struggle is to find someone in the 21st century that is descended from any of those siblings, and a bonus would be to find someone alive that can confirm any involvement with Henry Matier Glass and / or his siblings.
I have traced his 2 daughters to South Africa where they died, both childless. But unfortunately, I have failed to find a living descendant in Ireland at present.
So that is my current dilemma !!
Michael.
-
Some information will have to wait until I get back to Northern Ireland unless others post details but there was a Henry Matier linen merchant in Belfast at an earlier date- this example is apparently only a few miles from where I am at he moment-
http://travelphotobase.com/v/USCT/CTKWH875.HTM
http://www.dia.ie/works/view/49824/building/CO.+ANTRIM%2C+BELFAST%2C+ADELAIDE+STREET%2C+HENRY+MATIER+%26+CO.
The Will of Henry Matier late of Dunlambert Fortwilliam Park Belfast Merchant who died 10 March 1891 at same place was proved at Belfast by George Smith Clark of Fortwilliam Park Belfast Shipbuilder one of the Executors.
Will (21 pages!) mentions daughter Maria Louisa Sinclair wife of Sidney Edgar Sinclair, daughter Edith Lambert Matier, etc. (just skimmed through the first few pages)
http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx
-
Yes, there was a linen merchant in Belfast called Henry Matier. This caused me confusion in the beginning. But this man has Matier as his surname, while the man I am interested had Matier as his middle Christian name. Very confusing indeed. But we know from the dates of death that it is two different men. There may have been a business link between Henry's father (Robert) and Henry Matier as they were both in the linen trade around the same time. So I discounted the man with the surname Matier, who died in 1891, from my research. .
It is indeed interesting you found the similar links !!
Michael.
-
I didn't read all 21 pages of Henry Matier's Will but several children were mentioned in the first 5 or so pages including those I mentioned-
Maria Louisa Sinclair- remember the Sinclair nephew in the Glass household in 1901 & the Glass daughter name Maria Lambert Matier Glass
Edith Lambert Matier
The families were in the same business and the same names being used more than once makes me think that there is very possibly a family connecion. At the very least it looks likely that Henry Matier Glass was named after Henry Matier.

-
Yes, you are correct and I believe that Robert's son was named after the linen merchant Henry Matier. Quite possibly a relation Frances Matier married George Clark who established Workman Clark. Young Henry served his apprenticeship as a naval architect with Workman Clark.
I have a reasonable amount of information about that period. Where I have come a cropper is trying to bring those lines to the present time to find a living relative belonging to the Glass family.
Would you perhaps have any suggestions how I can trace a descendant of the Robert Glass family that may be living in Northern Ireland please ?
Thank you
Michael.
-
From reading that lot it looks as though a female Matier married a male Glass?
Annie
ADDED,
I should have explained. Middle names usually point to maiden names of female parents/grandparents (can be either side/line too) although not always.
-
Hello Rosinish,
Thank you for your interest in this topic. I appreciate your assistance.
Could you suggest how I could possibly link the children of Robert Glass to someone that is alive in Northern Ireland at the present. Aghadowey has very kindly listed them in reply at time 22.38 please ?
I was hoping perhaps that someone on RootsChat may have done a family tree about this interesting family ?
Kind regards
Michael.
-
Hi Michael,
I think you would 1st need to find a marriage for a Matier & Glass?
The problem with Irish records is the same as England/Wales.
Here in Scotland we can reduce the possibilities for finding people as our more recent deaths can be searched by both married & maiden names as well as mother's maiden names.
I'm unsure how you would determine any offspring without finding marriages to begin with.
To find descendants (up-to-date) is far harder than finding ancestors.
You may be lucky & someone else researching the same family may come across your post which happens but not always as quick as we would like.
As long as you have plenty of info. with plenty of detail on here, it would be picked up on a "google" search.
Sorry I can't be more specific.
You may though, want to draw up a Timeline of events in order for what you know about Robert to make it easier to follow for anyone reading who may think there's a connection.
The more info. the more chance of people finding it.
Names (incl. maiden names)/Dates/Places are the 3 main attractions.
Annie
-
Good morning Annie,
Thank you for your reply.
Is it from the fact that Maria had the middle name Matier and Henry also had the middle name Matier that you have formed the opinion that a female Matier had married a male member of the Glass family?
Or have you identified any other possible reason for that possibility ?
I had not considered that link previously.
It is from the ten births to Robert Glass and Sarah Jane Brown that I am trying to find a living relative. There are still some Glass family members living in and around Belfast today but my search so far has been fruitless. Any suggestions ?
Strangely, Henry Matier Glass was quite famous during WW1, he was the General Manager of Workman, Clark shipbuilders and at a time had 10,000+ men under his control. He was awarded an OBE for his civilian efforts during the War. There is very little documented about him !!
Kind regards
Michael.

Just getting a chance to trace descendants of Robert Glass not that I'm back home.
Found another sibling of Henry Matier Glass'- Anna Matilda Glass married a minister Robert William Sinclair according to son's birth certificate (remember young nephew Robert Louis Sinclair in 1901 census). Here's Robert Louis Sinclair's birth registration-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/efa7956019914
Father's address Cromwell Road- same as Galss family:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Cromac/Cromwell_Road/968844
-
Good morning Aghadowey,
Many thanks for remembering my query. I appreciate that.
That certainly extends the family line.
If Anna Matilda Glass is a sister of Henry Matier Glass, then that makes 11 in the family. Hopefully that extends the possibility of finding a living relative.
As it turns out, Henry Matier's line dies with the next generation. He had 2 daughters. They emigrated to South Africa. One got married and had no children. The other did not marry.
Have you any suggestions how to trace any living relatives of any of the descendants please?.
I tried the phone book and ringing any Glass names in the Belfast area. Alas, no luck.
Kind regards
Michael Traynor

Think we're getting closer to living descendants!
William Gilleslpie Reid in 1901 (just before marriage)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/South_Ward/Dobbin_Street/1010936
At least 2 online trees for Reid family FULL of errors but one indicates that William G. Reid died 23 Jan.1934 C'well, Victoria, Australia (no death listed for wife Helen).
1933 (London to Melbourne)- W.G. Reid, 65, retired civil servant, travelling with T.L. Reid, 31, combustion engineer.
Family tree lists other children but I want to verify before posting
-
Yes, you certainly have produced some additional names there indeed, thank you. Hopefully that family tree might produce at least one link to the present descendants......
Ive made contact with people in South Africa, but they are not blood relatives. They just knew the 2 Glass sisters when they lived there.
I did manage to make contact with an optician in Belfast called R. A. Glass, but unfortunately he had no information regarding his ancestors.
Michael.

Hello Aghadowey,
I just got home and what a pleasant surprise. You have turned up so many descendants of those 11 Glass children. And you are getting so many of them up to recent years. Its a pity so far they are in the Southern Hemisphere !!..... but you did discover some at least on the island here !. Thank you.
Gosh, its so close to contact with a living relative. That will be such a joy. What will be a greater pleasure if they have a family tree done. !!
Is that your comment to contact Sandra through that web site you listed ??
You have done terrific work in only a day or so on this task. You definitely know your way to ferret out family history details.
Thank you again,
Michael.
-
Yes, the comment about contacting Sandra on that site was mine.
I did say that once I was back home I'd likely be able to find more ;)
-
Thank you, Ive just sent Sandra a message. But seems the last message on that subject was 2 years ago. I live in hope !!
Yes, you definitely have been flat out on this family chain in the last couple of days. Thank you !
Michael.
-
Will post if I can trace any more of the family but hopefully you will hear back soon.
-
thank you. Ive got plenty about the 2 Glass girls and their aviation careers. Its just I'd like to link the story to a living relative. There has also been a treasure trove of material about one of them dating back 80 years that I'd like to let current family know about. Hence my persistence to find someone alive with such an interest. Your help in that regard has been amazing !!
-
Not quite what you are searching for by have (with help of an online tree) found a family connection between Robert Glass & Henry Matier- they were 1st cousins!

Thank you. Ahhhhh..... I kinda suspected that there might have been a link. That was good detective work to link them like that !!....it made sense Robert named his son Henry with the name Matier.
-
Hello Aghadowey,
Since your message 11 October I sent the message to Sarndra on
http://invokinglibitina.blogspot.ie/2013/03/flight-lieutenant-eric-norman-armstrong.html
but after 6 weeks there has been no response. Pity. Its over 2 years since she visited the site.
-
That is a shame but there's still a chance she will come across this thread via a search engine like Google or even that someone else with information might make contact. Fingers crossed ;D
-
I am a descendent of Robert Matier 1776-1834 and Elizabeth Glass 1776-1831 via their daughter Eliza Matier who married Alexander Kirker. Eliza's siblings were Robert Matier m. Anna Hawthorne and Henry Matier both Linen Merchants and Daniel Matier.
I am interested in all Connections to this Matier family and I am also currently trying to find the link between Elizabeth Glass and the Glass family who emigrated to Pennsylvania, PA between 1848-1853 possible children of Samuel Glass.
I do not live in Northern Ireland but I do live in the U.K.! I shall need read all the posts!
-
Hello Kirker,
Thank you for your reply.
My interest lies in the other side of the Matier / Glass family.
I am specifically interested in Henry Matier Glass born 1875. He was the son of Robert Glass that married Sarah Jane Brown.
I am particularly interested to chat with descendants of that line.
Thank you
Michael.
-
Have only just come across this - my husband's grandfather was William Glass who was killed in WW1 near Ypres. I have some information and photos concerning members of the family.
-
Hello Helen,
Many thanks for your reply.
Was he the same William that was killed at the Battle of Arras on 23 April 1917?
If so, I would be delighted to hear from you.
William was a brother of Henry Glass who was the father to the two female pilots that I researched.
Regards
Michael.
-
Yes, that's right. William had 4 sons and I knew 2 of them. They lived in the Isle of Man during their early years, after leaving Belfast, but left the island by the time WW2 broke out.
-
Yes, that's what I have as well. William's wife Harriet had moved to the Isle of Man with their 4 sons when WW1 broke out.
William's brother Henry had two daughters, Mabel & Sheila. They are the two ladies that I researched.
Which means your husband's father was Mabel & Sheila's first cousin.
Did you have much information handed down about those two female pilots of the 1930s?
-
I know very little about William Glass's siblings. After William's death his wife and children eventually permanently left Belfast because of the Troubles. His wife (Harriet) Phoebe was from the Isle of Man originally, so returned there to live with her brother Edward and her father Arthur Edward at Ballaglass Farm. I'm currently researching one of Edward's sons, another Edward, who preferred to join the RAF rather than run the family farm. He was a bomber pilot and was awarded a DFC. I wondered where the interest in flying came from - maybe he followed in the footsteps of his female cousins? I would love to know more about them. My father-in-law also joined the RAF but as a doctor, not a pilot. My husband's nephew is also a pilot with a well-known airline.
-
Gosh, aviation certainly runs in the Glass family !!
Mabel & Sheila got their Pilot's Certificates in 1934.
Mabel was a successful ferry pilot with the ATA during WW2.
Henry died in 1947 and his wife and 2 daughters emigrated to South Africa for the remainder of their lives.
Do you live in Northern Ireland Helen?
I'm in Dublin. My email address is (*).
The two sisters will be a chapter in a book I am shortly to publish about Irish female pilots pre-WW2, i.e. during the 1920s & 1930s.
Mabel & Sheila were introduced to flying by Amy Johnson who brought them flying in 1931. But the girls were too young to take lessons then. (born 1913 & 1914).
I purchased a treasure trove of WW2 flying memorabilia about Mabel from a lady in South Africa a couple of years ago.
