I have an ancestor James DOW shoemaker (b.18/9/1808 Skene - d.25 June 1889)
who had parents Lewis DOW and Elizabeth DEANS
While looking on the Scotlandspeople website I downloaded a possible
ancestor, Lewis DOW, labourer, who 4th feb 1856 died who is buried
(accoring to his death certificate) in Banchory Ternan in Kincardine,
originally from 'Glenbucket )Glenbuchat? Aberdeenshire. This was the only
death on the cvil register but my interest was not too piqued until I found
the following on the FreeCEN:
Piece: SCT1841/252 Place: Banchory-Ternan-Kincardineshire Enumeration
District: 9
Civil Parish: Banchory Ternan Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 9 Page: 7
Address: Crownest
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
DOW Lewis M 58 Ag.Lab Outside Census County (1841)
DOW Elisabeth F 64 Outside Census County (1841)
Thus - is there a MI for Banchory Ternan churchyard (couldn't find one on
ANESFHS website) and/or can someone check 1851 Kincardine census which may
have more info?
cheers

Hello,
I live in Banchory and have just started using Rootschat! So did you ever get any help on the above query? I see that often the scottish requests get less response.
I'm originally from England and so is all my family history but if you're still looking for some local info I'll see what I can do.
Regards
Keith.

Thanks Keith,
I just got back from 3 (email free) weeks on holiday. Thanks for the offer and am jusy trying to verify currently whether my James is infact the same James who was born to Lewis DOW. He has no headstone in the cemetery unfortunately.
Once I confirm they are related I will no doubt be in touch........ :)
cheers

hi cas, difficult one as lewis dow married elizabeth milne on the 7th jan 1807 banchory and had at least 4 children alexander, mary, margaret, angus.
death certs are funny things when it comes to registering a death as those close to the person can sometimes guess the surname of their granny, i would advise that you try and find the marriage cert as it would be more accurate with parents names.

I'd been hunting for Lewis and Elisabeth (my 4-g grandparents) on Ancestry without much success. With your help I traced them. They were marked as Lewis and Elisabeth 'Dows'. My line comes from their daughter Elisabeth (my 3-G Grandmother 1809-1874) whose death certificate refers to Lewis and Elisabeth.
I have had difficulty reading Elisabeth's Maiden Surname on the death certificate. it seems to be Milne. I would appreciate any confirmation or otherwise of this.

Hi jb7
Contact SP (see bottom of the their page 'contact us' and link through to the 'illegible image' screen). Provide them with the ref. no for Elizabeth's DC and they will send you out a paper copy which should be clear.
Regards.

Hello,
Lewis Dow and Elizabeth Milne I believe are my 4th ggrandfather Alexander's parents. I would love to hear from anyone related to this family. Alexander immigrated to Canada after the 1851 census.

Hello,
Great to be in touch with a member of this family.
I have yet to figure out where Lewis or Elizabeth were born. Any chance you have? When I type Kincardineshire as place born on the census it comes up blank .. meaning that's not right.
Did your Elizabeth stay in Scotland? As I mentioned in my post Alexander went to Canada and lived in Ontario.

Do you have information on any members of this family that may have come to Canada? I am still trying to connect my relative Alexander (came to Canada) as the son of Lewis and Elizabeth.
Thank you.
I am having trouble posting this so I hope it doesn't show up several times.

Saw the post. I suspect my ancestor James is an illegitimate child of Lewis Dow, but ran into a brick wall years ago. Been a bit quiet on genealogy hobby. At sometime I would be interested if any DNA testing of descendants would help shed light on this - but have to look into research first.

Hi, I have an Alexander Dow born 17 August 1826 that emigrated to the US in 1886. He is Lewis Dow's Nephew. Lewis Dow's brother Robert Dow is his father and Ann Dawson is his mother. Is this the right Alexander?
-
Unfortunately no. My Alexander was born abt 1808 in Banchory-Ternan,Kincardine,Scotland. He died in Canada between 1861 and 64. He emigrated after the 1851 Scotland census.
