You could start by downloading the free versions of Roots Magic, Legacy Family Tree and Family Tree Maker. Try them out and see which one rings your bell. There are many others around, no doubt everyone will suggest their personal favourite.

Start by defining what you mean by "best"?! ;D

Each piece of software has it own pro's and con's, and it's own ways of doing things.

Personally I use RootsMagic.

I tried quite a few of the free ones and a few paid ones with free trial periods earlier this year before deciding on Family Historian (version 6).
