Title: Heriditary Early Bird or Night Owl
Post by: Rishile on Thursday 22 September 16 08:59 BST (UK)
I have always been an Early Bird as was my father.  My mother was a late riser (if she could get away with it) and so was my brother.  Since researching my family history I have discovered that my father's line were mainly Ag Labs but also had a few early morning trades like Bakers, Millers etc.  My mother's line were Builders, Thatchers etc.

Do you think this and many other minor traits could be hereditary?

There was a programme on Radio 4's "In our time" hosted by Melvyn Bragg. The topic was "Circadian Rhythms" and it explained why some people are "earlys" and others are "lates"!

It will be available as a podcast (if you live in UK).

Good Morning Rishile,

The other week a young cousin who is researching one side of our family with me made contact with a lady who is also a cousin. He spoke to her and then phoned me to tell me the exciting news.

During our conversation he said "you and X have exactly the same laugh its quite spooky".

Passed down through the generations?

I've just listened to it here in Western Australia - fascinating, to a non-scientist Night Owl!

Fortunately BBC iPlayer is available worldwide for catching up on radio programmes - not for TV however, because BBC TV is still financed by a licence fee which is paid by UK television users.  (The TV licence used to include a radio fee but that was dropped some years ago.)

If you don't know which one you are - try the quiz - you might need a calculator to add up your score  ;)

I'm an evening type. I didn't used to be, as when I was working I was up soon after 6am and in bed by about 10.30pm. Now I go to bed when I'm tired, usually after midnight, and wake up between 8am and 9 am.

More intelligent children are more likely to grow up to be nocturnal adults who go to bed late and wake up late on both weekdays and weekend

I'll agree with that.  ;D ;D ;D
Also the "Night Owls like Alcohol"  ;)

Judging by the times on many posts, I think there are a lot of night owls on Rootschat. Trouble is, I tend to have a quick look just before I go to bed, see a post that interests me and get caught up in trying to answer.  ::)

I don't need a quiz to tell me that I'm a night owl - Frostyknight who has to be up at 7am on Monday :o I don't function that early in the morning. Groan. ;D

I came out as neither, though I am more of a late type. If I do need to be up early, I set two alarms :D
