Title: Funeral notice for Catherine Armstrong 1868
Post by: KMurray on Tuesday 20 September 16 14:32 BST (UK)
I have attempted TROVE several times but I think they are missing the days that I need.  Could someone look for the Sydney funeral notices of Catherine Armstrong nee Blakeley in Ashfield NSW Australia on October 15, 1868?  I am trying to confirm which of her children were alive and living in NSW at that point and at this point the funeral notices might be my only hope.

Thank you

Kathy

Possibly there never was a death notice?

Do you have her death certificate to see how her children are named...and the name of the informant?

How old would Catherine be when she died?

We do have her death certificate and it lists her children, but just first names, no last names that would say daughters were married or to whom.  Her son William was the informant and she would have been approximately 70-72 (as the records go). My problem is her daughters Mary and Catherine.  I don't know if they married, remained in Ireland, or were alive and in NSW.  I am hoping to see if they are listed in the notice and if their married names are given.  I have the rest of the clan but the two girls are a question.  Daughter Isabelle was one of the first to go to Australia but she returned to Ireland and lived out her life there.  Daughter Jane died just a couple of years before her mother.

Thanks so much for the quick response!

She is buried at Ashfield with William who I believe is her son.

William died 24 December 1882 aged 53.

There is a photo of their headstone: http://austcemindex.com/?family_name=Armstrong&cemetery=Ashfield

Funeral notice for William: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01iiu/

Death notice was after funeral: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01iiw/

It mentions that he was the brother of Thomas no mention of sisters.

Now I'm confused, the William who is buried with Catherine has father William. The Thomas who dies at Bombala aged 79, in 1914 has parents Catherine and Robert. He had been in Australia for 60 years coming from Fermanagh, Ireland.

3076/1882 William Armstrong   Parents William and Catherine CANTERBURY

12489/1914  Thomas Armstrong Parents Robert and Catherine BOMBALA

She was buried in St. John Cemetery in Ashfield.

I will be away from Rootschat for awhile and if there are other questions I will respond this afternoon.

Thanks again

There are no issues missing for those dates.  You can use the navigation arrows to go from issue to issue, just hover over the date and a drop down with arrows will appear.  BDM notices were usually always on page 1.

As to Jamjar's questions.  I was the source of the headstone photo.  Her husband William died in Ireland and she is buried with her son who died 14 years later and the William that erected the headstone in 1907 was his son (my grandfather) William.  As to Thomas his children got the name wrong at the time of his death.  I knew there were no sisters at the time of William's but just hoping for a hint at the time of the mother's.

Thank you for your help but it would appear we are done here.
