I am trying to trace 2 children of the 6 my great grandmother had in the Swindon Workhouse.
She had 6 children in the workhouse and I have traced 4 - one is my own grandmother, another died, and then a further 2 sisters.
I have managed to trace living relatives which is fantastic, but I now want to try and find out what happened to the 2 eldest girls.
ALICE WALL b 1887
LILIAN MAUDE b. 1890.
I have traced Alice on 2 census records - both as a servant, but for two different people, the last of which was living in a church owned property, so there may be a chance of further investigation.
Lilian Maude is almost invisible.
If anyone has any info on these people, or in fact has them in their tree, please do contact me.
I visited the Swindon History Centre last week - I found info on Ida May ( my grandmother) and her two siblings, Walter William Wall and Mary Lilian but was a little limited for time.
I intend to go back and see if the older records (big age difference) hold info about either of the two elder girls.
So, if anyone has any info, that would be wonderful.

Hi as you said Lilian Maude is in the workhouse in 1891 with single Mum Ellen and Alice 4. There is a listing in 1902 for Lilian M 10 as a visitor with Fields, Walter & Sarah in Swindon. Could it be possible that Lilian was fostered out to this family?

Do you mean the name of the people were fields?
When you say listing, what exactly is that listing - the census was 1901, so I wondered what you meant?
Yes fostering was possible, as the younger children were fostered - can you tell me where to access this listing? I am not convinced Sarah Ellen was in the workhouse all of the time, so I would like to follow this up.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Helen, sorry to confuse you...yes surname was Fields in 1901, Walter is 25 but Sarah is listed as 47, no comment, just joshing, probably errors. You said you were not convinced Sarah aka Ellen was in the workhouse all of the time yet in 1901 she is 33 pauper with children Walter Wm and Ida May. Do you feel she left the workhouse to return later? Tks Tinam

OK, but Sarah died at the age of 34 if you look at the title of my query? I doubt it can be her age was at or around 33 at the 1901 census, and I have her listed and checked off on this census with my grandmother and her youngest sister.

1901 32 Ehrima Road [?] Swindon
Walter Fields, 25, car driver b Lambourne
Sarah S Field, 47, b Malboro
Lilian M Wall, 10, visitor, b Stratton
Think this is her in 1911

Walter's wife was Sarah Ann Bullock - they married in1897 (and yes she was 22 yrs older than him)
-
Well done Mabel!! And she was still with the Fields(Field) who are childless in 1911, and yes you were right about their age differences. Lily listed as a boarder who would have been with them for over 10 years. Who is Olive Wall 3 years old born Chaddington??? Tinam
-
Thanks both - I will do the search now.

Getting my Sarahs mixed up, Sarah in this case is Fields...anyway, on with the search

Yes, given the district is Stratton it is reasonable to assume this is Lilian Maude.
I would hope the Guardians' notes of the time would reflect this (that the fields were fostering her)
My grandmother went to 2 foster families, as the first one didn't work out, and all this is noted down, so there's a fair chance there will be some info on her.
The trick is now to try and trace her - I found Alice, her sister at 24 but nothing after (Alice wasn't fostered, but led the life of a servant girl) but how to find them when they reach the age of maturity is the challenge - I have a lead with Alice as I have the name of the rector who owned the house and the "lady of independent means and the young school mistress who also lived there - very Pride and Prejudice isn't it?........Church records may have info on the house itself.
I will try Lilian in the 1911 census as well and also try and trace the 'foster" parents relatives - I have done this with my grandmother so its possible I can do this with Lilian also.
Thanks for this.

Most obvious guess is Lilian's child
Think this is the birth reg
Olive Grace Wall
Q1 1908 Cricklade Vol 5a, p52
Not getting far with either of them after 1911

I would say a child of hers...she is a daily servant, and a boarder, the term used for my grandmother with her foster parents.
She had no real roots and family so having an illegitimate child would be a logical step.
Thrilled to have found this - take a bow ladies!
Will follow up Olive's roots also.....

Now this is interestnig. Have found Walter's WWI service records in the Royal Engineers - says he's 41 when he enlists in 1915 (he looks to have actually been b c1878-80 if yuo look at birth and census records)
as well as wife Sarah Ann Bullock, he also claims a child - Olive Grace Field b Cricklade 1908
Looks like they have "adopted" her (given no formal procedures in those days)
There a further papers regarding application for a pension giving an address in Hempthorne Court, Rosser Street, Neath

Ladyhawk you rock!!!! I am trying to trace ancestors of the 5 wall children, and now I have four out of the five...FYI, my daughter wanted Olive as a potential baby name when she starts a family and now we have someone in the family by the same name!

Lilian Maude had no known father, so its a bit of history repeating itself here I feel.
Yes, the children came under the Children's Act of 1899- 1900 and fostering was in its infancy then, and my own grandmother benefitted from a good home with a good family.
Question is - is Walter her "dad" - his wife was older, so its entirely possible - not very palatable thought, but a possibility nonetheless.
-
I have started an entry on Ancestry for Olive Wall - I've attached the census entry for her.
A hint suggested her birth, but it said CRICKLADE WILTSHIRE, and yet she is down on the cenus as born in CHADDINGTON - I am not sure if this one and the same place?
Will check on this.
Also, I need to try and follow her up as a Field also....
-
Cricklade is the registration district - Chaddington is a village that falls within it (which is why I thought the reference I posted the moost likely)

There are references to both...I've just dug up an Olive Field travelling alone out of the UK...following this up now, but nothing else so far....
