Title: Mayglass
Post by: bluephil54 on Friday 16 September 16 00:51 BST (UK)
Hello Folks,
I haven't posted on the Forum for a while now although I still do keep looking on here to see if anybody else, from anywhere happens to be researching the same Family? My Family lived in Mayglass.....The O'Grady/Grady Family, but I appear to have hit the preverbial brickwall for quite some time now. But I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any Books available covering the history of Mayglass & the families who came from/lived there ? Have any Books on this subject ever been published which may be in Libraries or which can be purchased? From what I can gather, there doesn't appear to be any Parish Records available, any Records I have come across have been from Kilmore......any assistance would be great.
Many Thanks......Take Care & Be Good
                                                   Phil O'Grady

I don't believe that there is any link between Mayglass and Kilmore (in terms of any of the main records). Mayglass was a former civil parish, and is a "half parish" of the Catholic parish of Ballymore. Lots of records available for free online
- Info. on Mayglass at - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/irl/WEX/Mayglass/
- Tythe Valuation records (ca 1832/33?) at the NAI, see http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
- Catholic parish records, online at NLI, from ca 1840, http://registers.nli.ie
- Griffith's Valuation, 1853, at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
- 1901 and 1911 census returns, at the NAI, see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
- GRO records, from 1864, see https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp

Have fun - you can now do all this from home! When I started, you had to go somewhere to consult any of these sources. What period are you interested in - you did not mention? For example, a quick search on the Griffith's Valuation website shows a Thomas Grady living in the Townland of Gardamus Great, in Mayglass, in 1853.  Or perhaps the Richard and Alice Grady residing in Courtlands East in 1901, and Glebe in 1911 (from census site)? The GRO site shows their marriage (Richard Grady and Alice Kelly) on 1/12/1883 at Mayglass, see
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1883/10952/8003223
This gives their professions, address, and fathers names and professions - the grooms father is listed as Thomas Grady. The GRO site also shows that this Thomas Grady died in Mayglass on 29/10/1893, aged 60, death registered by his son Richard, also of Mayglass, see
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1893/05983/4701738

I was in the historic graveyard and church (ruins) of Mayglass at Easter. Very, very evocative spot, with a large Calvary dominating the foreground and the church ruins in the background, at sunset. Some of my Coopers are buried there. The old church is adjacent to the modern Catholic church. The graveyard is still very much open for business! Lots of new burials...

Hi There Wexflyer,
First of all Thank You for your post....much appreciated. Sorry not to have replied to you sooner, but in answer to a question you asked of me......The Father of Richard Grady/O'Grady,was Thomas Grady and all I know about Him is that He "just appeared to have come from" a place called Ballycogley along with Richard's Mother......and I am assuming Thomas' Wife....Catherine Staunton. This is where I hit the preverbial brick wall and couldn't find out their Dates of Birth and exactly where they were Born & baptized etc. Don't know either, where and when Thomas Grady & Staunton were Married ?
Thanks for your interest & assistance.
                                   Take care & Be Good

Hi Phil,
To offer any opinion on this, I think we would need to better understand how/what you know. Richard's marriage registration gives his father's name as Thomas, so we can take that as a given. But what makes you say that Thomas was from Ballycogley? Some document, or family tradition, or..? Similarly, why do you think Richard's mother was named Catherine Staunton?

I can't see that you've given any indication of dates for the family which makes it difficult to suggest where you could search for more information.
