Hi, I have been searching for information/photo on Joseph Douglas born in Limavady 1910. He married Bridget McGuinness in 1941/42 and went on to have a daughter in 1942. He was killed in an accident at Keady Quarry Limavady (as was his dad Henry some years later). The accident happened in 1945 when he was 35. He left his wife Bridie and my eldests sister A. A as we know her was only 3 when this happened. I know he was buried in St Canices Cemetary Limavady but there is no headstone for whatever reason. My mum and A moved back in with my grandparents in Drumalief and then on to Scotland. She was adopted by my dad Johnny Deighan. I know she attended Roe Valley school for a short time in 1947 as i found a picture of her in Limavady Past and Present site. I dearly want to obtain a picture of her own daddy as she is now in her 70's and has never seen a picture of him. I would appreciate any help at all with this. I know he had a sister Cissy and they originally lived in Terrydoo Walker there was also a sister called May McLaughlin and a brother callled James who moved to England many years ago. The only thing i have is a clipping from the local Coleraine newspaper as there had been an inquest into his death but sadly no picture. Thank you

The youngest Joseph Douglas in 1911 census is 3 years old (so born c1908)-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Aghanloo/Drumalief/594076
However, there is a birth for a Joseph Douglas born 18 Apr.1910 Carnett Balteagh with father Henry-

Thanks for this Aghadowey, its the middle one for sure as his father was Henry as mentioned in the newspaper clipping when he was killed at Keady quarry in 1945
I continue my search for a photo of him and more about his short life.
I have also found he lived at 1297 Argyle Street in Glasgow in 1945 with my mum Bridget Jane McGuinness before they moved back to Terrydoo to live with his father Henry and working at Keady. They were only back a matter of weeks before he died in August 1945

Thanks for this Mary, I am sure this must be him and it gives me more to go on with my search. I had found a Douglas in the 1911 Census showing a Henry aged 23 who I thought would be my Josephs father and also showed his Father as Henry (again) and his Mother Sussana. This was at 122 Spencer Road under Londonderry No5 Urban Londonderry. Not sure if this was the correct route but now I can follow this along and see how I go. Its like a needle in a haystack as so many families passed these names down to their sons and daughters. I appreciate your help with this. Margaret

Possible candidate for Henry Douglas who married Anna/Annie Millar (GRONI online shows the marriage in 1909) and had children including Joseph on 18 April 1910:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Fruithill/Ballyavelin_North/596537/
The one on Spencer Road married a Mary Ann Limerick in 1917, so doesn't really fit.
-
Gaffy, this looks more promising as the newspaper clipping regarding the inquest into his death back in 1945/46 when Joseph was killed in an accident in Keady Quarry says the following from his father "Henry Douglas, Terrydoo-Walker said the deceased who was his eldest son was 35 yrs of age" The paper clipping was from the Constitution and the date looks like January 1946
Thanks for this I can now discount the Spencer Road one.

When Henry Douglas married Anna Millar on 20 December 1909, his address was given as Drumramer (hers was Carnet) and his father given as Henry Douglas, a cottier. The 1901 and 1911 censuses show this family in Drumramer:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Keady/Drumrommer/1525680/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Keady/Drumramer/596728/
The Head of Family in these census returns looks like a Mary Jane Warke (father Alexander), who married a Henry Douglas (father William) in Limavady RC church on 19 July 1874, since this couple went on to have a number of children who match those in the census returns. They also a son Henry in 1882:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1882/02798/2026914.pdf
Critically, the baptismal record for this son Henry (which cites him as Henry James Douglas, but parents names and location match perfectly) has an annotation to confirm that he went on to marry Annie Millar on 20 December 1909. Bingo.

Henry Douglas senior (Mary Jane Warke's husband) died in 1892 when Henry junior (Henry James) was only 10:

As previously posted, Henry Douglas senior married Mary Jane Warke on 19 July 1874 in Limavady RC Church. On the same day, a Henry Douglas who was an adult presbyterian, was baptised into the RC Church at Limavady, the record says that he was the son of William Douglas and Rachel Henry of Ballycrum (left page, 2nd entry down):

A bit of speculation, but just to note this death of a labourer's widow Rachel Douglas with a reported age of 86 at Terrydoo in 1893 (informant Nancy Douglas: note below), just a possibility for the wife of William Douglas of Ballycrum mentioned above:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1893/06014/4711955.pdf
Also just wondering if these folk below are connected (note how we have eventually come round to the location 'Terrydoo Walker' and note the name Nancy Douglas as mentioned above):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Lislane/Terrydoo_Walker/1526526/
The Head of Family in the above census return, Wilson Douglas, married Nancy Forrest on 12 January 1872, significantly, his address at that time was given as Ballycrum and his father given as William Douglas, so I'm thinking that Wilson was possibly a brother of Henry Douglas senior who married Mary Jane Warke.
So to recap the line of thought so far, the possibility is that William Douglas of Ballycrum and Rachel Henry had a son Henry Douglas (born c. early 1850s?) who in 1874 converted to RC and married Mary Jane Warke, who in turn had a son Henry James Douglas in 1882 who married Annie Millar in 1909, who in turn had a son Joseph Douglas in 1910 who was the one killed in an accident in Keady Quarry in 1945.

On top of what you've said, Joseph Douglas and his father Henry Douglas (Henry James / Henry junior) must have had a routinely hazardous job, for there is also this account from Friday 21 August 1936 in the Derry Journal: A fall of rock at a quarry on the face of Keady mountain, near Limavady, on Wednesday, injured two men, Henry Douglas (60), of Terrydoo and his son, Joseph Douglas (28), who were engaged at quarrying operations. Without warning, a great mass of overhanging rock gave way and crashed down. Henry Douglas's injuries were slight, but his son was struck by a boulder and rendered unconscious. He was taken to the Roe Valley Hospital by ambulance suffering from concussion, and has not yet regained consciousness. Hopes are entertained for his recovery.

Trying not to repeat what has already been covered in the other topics posted at reply #11... so just to round off the children of Henry Douglas senior and Mary Jane Warke shown in the 1911 census return - repeated below for convenience (the birth for their son Henry junior / Henry James born in 1882 was previously posted at reply #7):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Keady/Drumramer/596728/
Joseph was baptised in Limavady RC Church on 30 October 1874, the record says he was born on 15 October, the address was Stradreath (Stradreagh?) (right page, 3rd entry down from top):
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633034#page/112/mode/1up
Alexander was born on 16 March 1878 at Ballycrum:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1878/02969/2087758.pdf
Thomas was born on 24 December 1884 at Ballycrum:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1885/02662/1981288.pdf
Mary Anne was born on 18 November 1887 at Ballycrum:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1887/02542/1941015.pdf

Turning to the background of Mary Jane Warke who married Henry Douglas senior in 1874 (the marriage record said that her father was Alexander Warke, a farmer), I noticed this Administration case in the PRONI Will Calendars:
Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Mary Anne Warke late of Tirmaquin County Londonderry Widow who died 2 July 1893 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Mary Jane Douglas of Ballycrum in said County Widow the Daughter.
The death record for Mary Anne Warke cites the informant as a James D. Mullan, a cousin, present at death at Tirmaquin:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1893/05997/4706154.pdf
I also noticed a marriage (GRONI online has it) on 20 November 1849 at Christ Church (CoI) Drumachose of an Alexander Warke of Limavady to Mary Anne Mullan of Tirmaquin, both parties' fathers John Warke and Thomas Mullan were given as farmers.
So, a possibility perhaps that the parents of Mary Jane Warke were Alexander Warke and Mary Anne Mullan.

There was a notice in the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer of 1955 for the death of a 40 year old Alexander (Alec) Douglas who died on 19 March 1955 at Leeds General Infirmary, it says that he had 10 year's service in the Yorkshire Post machine room and that he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Douglas of Terrydoo, Limavady, the cortege left 11 Springfield Place in Leeds and cremation was at Lawnswood. Presumably this was Joseph Douglas' brother, another son of Henry Douglas and Annie Millar mentioned at reply # 3, his 1914 birth record shown here:

I am trying to digest the amount of information posted about the Douglas family and after my first quick scan of it all a lot makes sense. i was told the brother who moved to live in England was possibly called James but this now confirms it was Alexander. Joseph my mums first husband did work in Keady Quarry and from what I can make out his father Henry aka Harry worked alongside his son. Some years after Joseph was killed in the accident at Keady in 1945 his father also met the same fate and the story from locals was that the big truck removing the rubble and rocks was reversing out and accidentally ran over him where he died instantly from his injuries. I was also told of a sister Cissy but i have never been able to find out what Cissy would have been short for. She must have been the youngest and from what I recall she was still living when I started my quest to find out more about Joseph for my eldest sister, who will be delighted with all this information. Its unbelievable to see Joseph was also injured aged 28 and then for another accident to have killed him in 1945. My sister was born in 1942 in Limavady and then they must have moved here to Scotland for a few years they had only arrived back at Terrydoo 3 weeks before Joseph was killed in the quarry. My mum went back to live at her parents in drumalief after the death along with my sister who was 3yrs old at the time. Thank you so much for all your help with this. I am now going to go back through it all and read it again.

Cissy is usually a nickname for 'sister'
-
I didnt know that and had been thinking of names it could have been shortened to :)

... Notes:
other children born to this couple. Henry 1912,Alexander 1914, Anna Jane 1918,Mary 1920.
Just speculation, but in light of the above childrens' details provided at reply #3 for parents Henry Douglas and Annie Millar, I wonder if the other person mentioned in the following Administration case entry for Henry Douglas in the PRONI Will Calendars might be his daughter?
Douglas Henry of Terrydoo Limavady P.O. County Londonderry old age pensioner died 1 August 1957 Administration Londonderry 23 September to Annie Jane McCloskey married woman. Effects £312 0s. 5d.
Also, an Annie Douglas who was the wife of a labourer Henry Douglas, died on 3 July 1947 at Terrydoo in the presence of her husband and was reported as 60 years old - this age is consistent with Annie (Millar) Douglas living with Henry (and son Joseph) in Ballyavelin North in the 1911 census return posted at reply #5.
-
I would agree with this and knowing the little bits I found out from various locals it does add up. Joseph died at Keady 1945 his mum died 2 yrs later 1947 and his father working at Keady died in an accident also in 1957 it's so sad. The mention of Annie Jane is also tying up as my sister was called Ann Jean (Jane ) Douglas though we always called her Ann my mum and Irish family always called her Jean. We never knew why this was.

I saw a picture of two women in the limavady of the past and present site standing by a car one of them was my mother Mary Kathleen Mcguinness who later married logue I was wondering was the other lady Bridget Mcguinness. Ray Logue

RE:Joseph DOUGLAS/LIMAVADY
Hey 'Murphy2011',
I have just read your post referenced <<on: Thursday 15 September 2016. It is the starting post on page 1 of 3 pages.
I am MA the daughter of Henry James DOUGLAS, born in Limavady in 1912, who in turn, I deduce to have been the brother of Joseph Douglas born in Limavady in 1910. Therefore it appears that your sister (half) A is in fact my first cousin. Amongst my family papers I have a newspaper article of the accident at Keady Quarry, Limavady in which appears a photograph of your sister's father (my uncle). I am happy to share whatever information you or your sister require. It's not excessive as indeed my father moved to England in 1940 when he was discharged from the army. He married in England where I was born and brought up. He died in 1953 of a war injury.
