Hi there,
Could anyone help me decipher the 3rd name on this census record attached? The first two I know are James and Catherine, finding it tricky to make out the third name, thanks!
-
Dina?

I can't decide on Dina or somthing else. Would be grateful for a larger scan or source.

Her name is transcribed here as Dina

Looks like Dina to me although being an Irish census may be short for Geraldine if you're looking for a birth?

Thanks. Yeah I know Dina was what it is transcribed as but wondering what a different set of eyes might see!
Never thought of Geraldine, thanks Rosinish!
Any other suggestions as to what "Dina" might signify are most welcome! thanks again for replying guys!

Sorry, my machine kept updating stuff so am a bit late. I brought it up a bit more and see it as definitely Dina now. I enlarged it so I'm putting it up ;D
I've known Dinas as Diana and Geraldine.

I'm only going by the fact it's an Irish census.
It may actually be a misspelling of Dinah?
If it had been a Scottish census there are other names such as Donaldina, Murdina, Rodina etc.

Do you have names of James and Catherine's relatives? As Annie, says, in Scotland 'ina' is tagged on to a range of names - including male ones if too many daughters/no males.
-
To be honest I don't think she is actually their daughter. James dies a few years later aged 80+ and Catherine had to be well past 40 as well. Can't find any Dina/Dinah being registered either. Wondering if she was a legitimate child or maybe a grand-daughter! All a mystery for now! :)
-
No....on 1901 Dina is aged 15 yrs & mother Catherine is only 40 yrs i.e. would have been 25 yrs old when Dina was born ???
Annie
-
Have you checked for "female" births leaving forename blank for that era & area?
Annie
-
Who was the informant on James' death cert?
Seems an awful jump in age from being 60 yrs old on 1901 & then 80 yrs old "a few" yrs later on death ???
Annie
-
Yeah Im searching other variants of the name, nothing positive showing up yet.
Catherine was informant for death, and marked as wife!
-
Neither Catherine nor James could read on 1901.
Did it give their ages on their marriage to give you a rough average of ages from marriage/census/deaths?
Sorry Tiopeal, only trying to help ;D
Annie
-
Do you have Catherine's death & what were the details on that?
Annie
-
Do you have any info. further back such as births/parents names/siblings for them etc?
All these questions/answers could possibly help?
Annie
-
Another thought Tiopeal...
When did Catherine die & have you found her on 1911?
Have you looked for Dina in 1911?
Even if she married she may well still have used the forename Dina?
Annie
-
No, never found Catherine's death for sure. Yeah I have come across a few Dina's and researched them more. One for instance seemed to be a pet name maybe as she was baptised Bridget or something like that. Another was really called Diana. She has been a mystery for a while now so maybe something will turn up some day! Thanks again for your suggestions Rosinish!
