Title: place recognition of photograph taken in Germany
Post by: judy2015 on Thursday 08 September 16 23:02 BST (UK)
Hi,
I have been researching my family history and I am getting stuck with my grandmother's family in Germany. Most of my great grandmother's (Emma) siblings came to America in the late 1890's or early 1900's. The family last name was Wünsche. My understanding is that they were from the Stuttgart area. One of my great great aunt's, Emma's youngest sister, Liesel, became a deaconess for the Lutheran church and never came to America. I have some family photos of her with my Great grandmother and my grandmother and great uncle, on a visit over to Germany in 1909. I know very little about Liesel and her life as a deaconess and am trying to find out more. I have a picture of her, I believe to have been taken many years later, with many other deaconesses and women dressed in the clothes of the time. I am wondering if anyone could tell me where a meeting such as this may have been held and why or if any people can be identified in the photo that would give me a clue as to where to look for more information on Liesel Wünsche.

I have included a photo taken of Liesel as a much younger woman, in her deaconess clothing. The back of the photo says Breslau Zwingerstr. 24 gegenüber der Liebichshöhe. Under that it says Fernsprech Anschluss No. 1069 & the date 1898.

I would appreciate any suggestions that people may be able to give me as to where to learn more about Liesel. Thanks so much. Judy

If I have understood your information correctly you are looking for information on Liesel Wunsche who lived in Germany.

Although I can't help, I am wondering if it might be an idea to have this topic moved to the Europe board.  I feel it might be more likely to attract the help of any rootschatters who have a good knowledge of german genealogy and can therefore assist you with your query.

If you would like to do that contact the moderator who can get the topic moved for you.

Best Wishes from Girl Guide

Can I suggest that you put the word Germany in the topic title?   As it is at the moment there is no country mentioned.

 :) :)

Breslau was the name for Wroclaw in present day Poland, it was part of Germany;

I have included a photo taken of Liesel as a much younger woman, in her deaconess clothing. The back of the photo says Breslau Zwingerstr. 24 gegenüber der Liebichshöhe. Under that it says Fernsprech Anschluss No. 1069 & the date 1898.

What you have here is the photographer's address, in the usual German format:
We'd say 24 Zwingerstrasse; then "opposite the Liebichshöhe"
The next bit is literally "Telephone Connection No. 1069"

The Liebichshöhe is a viewpoint in Breslau/Wroclaw - named after a benefactor named Liebich. There's a German Wikipedia page about it at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liebichshöhe - but beware Google Translate: since the name Liebich can be broken down into German words, the English version comes out variously as "Lieb ego height" and "lover ego level"  :o

Hi Judy,

the meeting would have been at a "deaconess motherhouse".

Thank you Rudolf. That makes sense that the meeting would have taken place at a Mother House. Do you know of any in the Stuttgart area?

Thank you, Arthur. I will check out the German wikipedia page. I will check it out. With the address, maybe I can find out a little more about the area and if there was a Deaconess Motherhouse there. I think I had read there was in a google book I am reading now on the Deaconess movement.
