This photo is supposed to be of my great-great grandparents from County Cork. That's what I was told, but I have a relative in Ireland who said she doesn't think it could be them, because it would be somewhere between 1855 and 1865 when it was taken. She said it wasn't likely that people from their rural area would have gone to a studio and had a portrait taken in that time period. My relative says it's probably a wedding picture of one of their children, taken twenty years later, around 1880. Can anyone help me date it? And does this look like a wedding picture from that time? Thanks.

I might be totally wrong but the lady's clothes and hair style suggests 1905-1910 to me.

I agree with Gadget 1905 up to WW1 for me.

Thanks for the quick reply! That time frame would work if it was the son or daughter of my great-great-grandparents. Do you have any guess as to the ages of the people? They look no older than 30 to me. And does it look like a wedding picture?

Usually it would be the woman sitting down, I would have thought? So unlikely to be a wedding photo, surely
Or, am I mistaken?

They could be in their 20s or very early 30s. I think it is quite possibly a wedding photo :)
Note how she is showing her wedding ring.

I'm with Gadget on all counts with this one...she is displaying her wedding ring with obvious pleasure.

I agree with Gadget and Carol. :) The woman is touching the man signifying intimacy, and her ring being so obviously on display is the clincher. If they were hard working rural folks they may look older than you expect.

Wrong again SB. ::) If you ever look at the photos posted on this forum you will notice that it was very common for the woman to be standing and the man to be sitting.

That is not my specialist subject

In that case, may I suggest that you refrain from posting and providing incorrect and misleading information. ::)

I was speculating, I was not saying "categorically"

Sorry John but I don't think advertising is allowed on this site :-\

Carol:
I am sorry. It is just a link to an ebook novel based on my family's Irish history. I will not post the link in future.

To avoid speculation you could do what the rest of us do....a little research into the subject...you will be surprised at how much knowledge you will gain ;)

Good advice Carol.
SB, imagine if yours had been the only reply.
Poor John might have thought that you knew what you were talking about and believed what you said. You could have messed up his research by telling him that this isn't a wedding photo. :(

I'm afraid you know that you are mistaken SB, which is probably why you just amended your earlier post to add this line. ;D
To John, apologies for hijacking your thread, but I just wanted to address the above comment.

Hi John,
You are welcome to post any commercial posts in our for sale section, here is a link.

Scouse boy I often read posts that I can not answer, so I don't - I wouldn't want to take someone down a line of thought if I was not confident that I help with their research. Sometimes better just to wait and learn from the replies ;)
