I'm wondering if anyone knows anything of, or has ever heard of, the Provo family that lived in Dartmouth, Devon?
The family rumour is that they fled to England from France during the French Revolution, and that they were rather rich. My grandmother can remember her second great aunt Louise/Louisa Provo, but I have never come across this person in all of my research ???
I'm really interested in tracing my French roots. I know that French middle names like Lefevre and Minett were common in our family, so I believe the French connection does exist; but I've no idea when or where it comes in. My guess is that it would appear towards the late 1790s.
I would be really grateful for any insight or advice at all.
Thank you

There's one Louisa Provo in the 1881 census living in Tottenham.
The family is:
Leonara Wood Widow Age 51 b. Newton Abbot, Devon
Louise Provo Widow Mother age 22 b. Ireland (further census entries say Dublin)
Gladys N Provo Daughter age 2 b. Enfield, Middlesex
You don't give any dates - is this the right time frame?

1851 census has a George Provo (1823) and family living in Totnes.
No Provo in Dartmouth?
Aha! I thought the name sounded familiar! :-\

Thanks everyone,
I know that my great great grandmother Frances was born to a George Atkins Provo and Mary Ann Elizabeth Whidhorne Wogan in 1861. George was lost at sea a few years later and Mary remarried. It seems that George was born to a Nancy Atkins but the whole thing is a mystery as family stories and recollections just don't seem to add up with the information (or lack thereof) available in the archives ???
Thanks everyone
