My grandfather Edward Gittins b.1869 in Seacombe, Cheshire and Emma Billington b.1867
Christened in Bamber Bridge,Lancashire had three children but then Emma died in surgery
I believe. Edward later married my grand-mother Jane Lidderdale. I'm researching the descendants of Edward and Emma. I believe their children were born in Preston, Lancashire,
a boy and two girls.
My second cousin was working on the family tree but now I've lost contact with her, can't reach her by e-mail or phone. Ken Gittins, Ontario, Canada.

The 1901 census shows 2 children - Lilian aged 13 b Bury and Edith aged 11 born Preston
The 1891 shows the same 2 children. Suspect any other children were from the second marriage
-
Freebmd has an Edith Gittins marriage in Preston in 1909 but can't see one for Lilian
Edith married Albert Livingstone Barlow
Lilian's birth was registered as Lily in the March qtr 1888
Think Edith only had one child to Albert - see freebmd. Edith E Barlow b December qtr 1911 in Bury

Hello Carole Thank you for your speedy reply, I'm new to RootsChat.Com so I need to learn how to trace ancestors. Do you have some interest in the Gittins ancestry ? I knew all of Edward and Jenny's children as they were brothers (6) and sister (1) of my dad, Joseph Stanley. Also there were two children who died in infancy. Jenny died in 1925 and Edward married for the third time
a women named Lavinia. Ken Gittins

Looks like your Edward may still have been alive in 1939 -- an Edward Gittins, born 1868 in Preston
Strangely I cannot immediately see a death for Edward in the local area at the moment.
Moderator comment: 1939 register details removed

Hi Ken
No connection - just trying to fill in some gaps for you.
The only living children who were born to Edward & Emma are the 2 girls, Lily & Edith. They are the only ones who appear on the 1891 and 1901 censuses. They may have had others who died in infancy between censuses.
As you mention - Jane (Jenny) died 1925 aged 36 so not much younger than Emma
-
I suspect Lillian is in Preston in 1911 - mistranscribed on Ancestry as Githens
-
There is a marriage in Preston in 1932 - Edward Gittins to Ellen Eccles but nothing to a Lavinia
-
If the 1932 marriage is correct - 3 children were born between 1932 - 1937. 2 girls and a boy
-
There is a Lily Gittins marriage in 1912 to Frank Walker in Runcorn Cheshire at Runcorn All Saints

How on earth did I miss that marriage???
Lavinia re-married in 1955 to Charles Parkinson so Edward must have died between 1940-1955
A Lavinia Parkinson b 22.6.1906 died 1978 Preston.
If that's the right Lavinia Edward was 72 when they married and she was 34??
LancashireBMD shows her mothers maiden name was Rawcliffe
John James Billington married Mary Rawcliffe in 1904 Preston so I wonder if John was related to Emma Billington
-
Yes, Edward would have been about 72 when he and Lavinia got married. He was born in 1869 and died in 1949 to the best of my knowledge. I never met my grandfather as we lived in Hendon, N.W.London. It wasn't till the 50's I went with my parents to Preston and met many uncles, aunts & cousins. My father had six brothers and one sister. - Ken Gittins
-
Lavinia's father seems to have been born about the same time as Emma but was not her brother but they could have been cousins. Billington is a very common name in the Preston area.

Hi Ken,
It is my understanding that the Gittens family of Carlow - Kilkenny Ireland are a native irish family - is there evidence of Cheshire origins?.

Hello Laurence
My family tree dates back to 1535 when the name was spelled Gyttyns but it later changed to Gittins.
Our tree begins in Hawarden, Flintshire which is next Cheshire. I believe some of the Gittins may have worked in a copper mine in Avoca, Co. Wicklow but that information is sketchy. My great grandfather William Gittins was born in Flintshire but lived in Cheshire, his wife was Ann Jane McCullough. Their son Edward was my grandfather and his second wife Jane Lidderdale was my grand
mother. They raised a family of seven boys and a girl in Preston, Lancashire. Your welcome to access my family tree.
Regards, Ken Gittins

Hello Ken,
I had read a post elsewhere suggesting Edward son of Michael and Jane was baptized in Avoca,County Wicklow.
I include a link below to County Carlow listing farmers liable for tithes [ church tax ].Laurence Gittins is mentioned.

Extended family in the same parish using the Gittens spelling are in the link below.

The surname in Ireland is common in counties Mayo and Sligo where families alternate between Gettins and Gethins.

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=gettins&firstname=&county=&townland=&parish=&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=10
Percy Gethins is mentioned for county Sligo. He descends from Sir Richard - see below.

The Gethings spelling is most common in county Donegal and also in Carlow and Wexford.
