Title: stuck on the black isle 9Avoch, Strath of Auchterflow) McLENNAN, BAIN
Post by: casliber on Saturday 23 July 05 11:24 BST (UK)
Hi, I am a bit stuck as I have a John McLennan b. 21 February 1792 in Strath of Auchterflow (little village or farm near Avoch). Now I have his parents as a William McLennan and Margaret Bain but when I checked the original OPR scanned by the LDS there is a large chunk missing for the latter part of the 18th century.

This would have encompassed the possible time of marriage of William McLennan and Margaret Bain

On John's wedding entry, he is a labourer. The couple were to settle in Strath. He remained a labourer for a few years but became a shoemaker sometime before 1822. In 1827 he was a shoemaker, but in 1829 he was a labourer again. He is described as a tenant in Strath in Auchterflow in 1831 and 1837.

After 1841 the family moves to Aberdeen. His wife Grace Macaulay/McAnley came from Lochbroom daughter of an Angus McAnley and Isabella Mackenzie

I got the Memorial Inscription book for Avoch cemetery but no luck there. Is there another cemetery near strath of auxchterflow the other way?

Any ideas where to look for more info on William Mclennan/Margaret Bain?

Gosh, I'd forgotten about this post. I have got Easter Suddie with no luck. I know the likelihood of a headstone is pretty low but one can always hope..

suddie records should be located at Fortrose district office and their contact details (hopefully) are:
Leisure Centre
 Deans Road
 Fortrose
 IV10 8TJ
 01381 620797

also, here is a copy of where the other burial records for ross & cromarty are held...

kind regards,
Lorna.

glad i am of some use now and again.  :)

thanks for the offer Ian. - i met Malcolm last time he was over here and we swapped some of our maclennan info, but as yet our families have no connection.

i was born and brought up on the black isle (between urray & killearnan, where my ancestors lived for many years) and i now live in dingwall. how about yourself, are you local?

i have a friend in canada who has mclennan links in Avoch. if you want to p.m me any details, i can pass them on to her to see if she can find any links.

kind regards,
Lorna.

...actually, moving outwards, which graveyards (after Avoch and Suddie) would have been relatively close to Strath of Auchterflow?
cheers
Cas (figuring out which kirkyards to check next........)

I have been following up a McLennan line via Donald Smith & Isabella Smith(McLennan) who farmed on The Hill of Fortrose. Isabella is the daughter of William McLennan & Margaret (Mc) Bain. I am interested also to find out more about William McLennan including details of his death.

Hmm. interesting. This branch is tricky as there was a whole section illegible/missing on the LDS microfilm of the period where William Mclennan and Margaret Bain would have been married. I have never found anything other than their names, which were on the son John Mclennan's marriage entry (I think??). I need to go back and check this as this was one of the earliest lines I followed about 10 years ago and my record keeping was less precise then. I got the names of siblings of John off the LDS and film - and all were born in Strath of Auchterflow beginning with a Donald on 8 April 1790, John 21 Feb 1792, William 28 Jun 1795 (obviously died young), William again 16 May 1798 and Roderick 13 Jan 1801. I don't recall seeing deaths on the film, which is a shame as the first William would have been good to find on an LDS film. Incidentally, I didn't see isabella/Isobel as a sibling, and am intrigued as to what records you have.

I have John Mclennan's 1856 death certificate which states that his father William Mclennan was a farmer by occupation and (not surprisingly) deceased.

I have not done much fam. history at all in the past four years.
cheers
Cas

Thank you for the info. According to the 1851 Census for Rosemarkie, William McLennan, blind, pauper farmer, resided with his daughter Isabella Smith (McLennan) & her husband (son in law) Donald Smith. William McLennan is shown as being born at Knockbain, Ross Shire. According to the Death Certificate of Isabella McLennan (Smith) who died at Henrietta Park, Resolis on the 28.1.1875 her parents were William McLennan & Margaret McBain.
Also, my records appear to indicate that a John McLennan married a Margaret Bain on 11.12.1829 at Avoch & they & their family according to the 1841 Census for Avoch, resided at Strath of Aucherflore. They were still at the Strath according to the 1851 Census for Avoch. It is interesting to note that this John McLennan was born at Ballan?
I hope this info helps.
Cheers.

Hmmm, nice work. be good to find William Mclennan the elder on the 1841 census too, or a grave (but that is highly unlikely). The parish records for whatever area covers Rosemarkie might have deaths recorded on them (some do, cross fingers). Now I have to dust the cobwebs off and find the 1851 census somewhere.... ;D
