Post by: franpow on Friday 26 August 16 21:23 BST (UK)
Ive been searching for my G. Grandmother Amelia Sarah Peebles born in Barnsley around 1862. She married  Charles Winfield of Oxford a jobbing builder  They moved down to South Wales during 1888

When and where did she wed?
What names witness, who was her father,
Is she consistent with age and birthplace in census?

Can't seem to find her before marriage - if all else fails the marriage certificate should give the name of her father as a starting point.

Possible for 1881 in Swindon Wilts transcribed as

Amelia People 15 born Doncaster Yorks visitor boarder scholar

Head of house is John James 69 and wife Hannah 73

Funny enough there is a baptism in Swindon of Amelia Sarah Peebles 27 Sep 1868

Strange, but there is this christening?

27th September 1868
St Marks, New Swindon, Wiltshire

Amelia Sarah Peebles     daughter of
Clifford Crawford Peebles and Elizabeth

Is the combination of names just too much of a coincidence?

I wondered if she had been adopted but  ???

Do those parents show up anywhere I wonder - maybe they died and she was left on her own.

There's a Clifford C Peebles death in Newport M age 61 in Mar 1906

There's a Crawford Peebles marriage to Elizabeth James or Dando but that's in Wolverhampton Dec 1863 so we are going all over the country.

Although Amelia is with a James family in 1881 so could be a family connection.

3 trees on Ancestry - none have her parents names

Her birth reg is on freebmd as shown in an earlier reply - simplest way is to buy a copy of her birth cert

Elizabeth Ann was born Wolverhampton so that fits with the marriage found there.

1871 would help somewhat but agree certificates are the best confirmation.

the census records after Charles and Amelia were married say that Amelia was born in Doncaster (yofb varies from 1862-1868)

Where did you get that your Amelia was born in Barnsley from please

1871 under Pecoles

Crawford 27 engine fitter at railway works
Elizabeth 27
Elizabeth H 7 b Wolverhampton
Amelia J 5 b Doncaster
Clifford C 3 b Swindon
Alice M 3 months b Swindon

I think they moved about a bit - from Doncaster to Swindon and baptised Amelia here instead of there

A simple search here on freebmd gives a candidte birth year of 1866 Doncaster district and a 1894 marriage in Wales.

Her father Clifford or Crawford from Swindon was an engine fitter on the railways which would account for them moving around probably. Doncaster and Swindon were both big railway engineering towns.

Amelia's birth varies from census to census, the 1871 one giving her true age.

Confirm Amelia s parent by that birth certificate in 1866 (not 63) Doncaster district and then get the marriage certificate of her parents.
