Hi ,was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please.
I am trying to find a child born in taunton workhouse 1920/30/40.
The mother was institutionalised there .
The mother was called Elsie Lovell.
Many thanks

workhouses.org points to Somerset Heritage Centre for records of Taunton Workhouse :
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Taunton/
There is only one birth of a Lovell, mother's name Lovell, in Taunton 1920-1940. I can't give the details as she may be living but you should be able to find it .
-
as has been said it certainly looks like the person is still alive your best bet is to try free bmd and look it up yourself .

Hi ,thanks for reply ,but the link you sent me has just got me going from one to another ,
-
I'm afraid not everything is on line ! You will; need to visit the Heritage Centre or enquire by email in the first instance - that's Genealogy !
-
On the workhouses link that CB gave you I can see that the birth records go up to 1932. If your person was born after that I don't think there will be any records.
You could write and ask the Somerset Heritage Centre to check what records they have. Their email addy is:
somersetarchives@swheritage.org.uk
-
it may be that there records only go up to 1832 but in red above the list it does also say that there is possibly a hundred year closure period also for some repositories .

Try looking at FreeBMD?
www.freebmd.org.uk
-
Thankyou everyone for your help ,have been on free bdm and have a name however there are then 2 more entries but with different surnames ,would that suggest she was adopted and deregistered ??
-
Adoptions don't show on the GRO registers, and therefore not on FreeBMD, either?
-
I'm only seeing one straightforward result. I searched on Lovell , mother's maiden name Lovell, Taunton and year range 1920-1940 as you gave in your original post. The result is * Lovell Taunton 5c 769 Jun 1940. Even widening the range to 1950 that's still the only result. Am I missing something ?
-
We have a family member with that first Christian name ,I am wondering if it's the same person!don't wanna stir up a hornet's nest ,so when I put in the name we know her as it came up as late entry on the bmd ,so am a bit confused as her mum was the sister of the lady who had the baby if that makes sense
-
not unusual for another family member bringing up a child as there own when it wasnt , but as you say tread very carefully just in case ,somethings are best left unsaid especially if the person in question is unaware of the circumstances of there birth .

Just one more question ,would they be able to register the child as there's once it's already been registered?? Many thanks

Found this snippet of information on the internet - original dated 2009 so don't know if it still applies today.
When an adoption has been granted by a court in England and Wales, the
court issues an order which is the authority for an entry to be made in
the Adopted Children Register held at the General Register Office.
Adoption certificates are then produced from this register under the
child's new details. The adoption certificate replaces the original birth
certificate for legal and administrative purposes.
The original birth record is not removed following an adoption, however,
the entry in the birth register is annotated with the word "adopted" in
the margin and all subsequent copies of the entry will show the
annotation.
It is possible to obtain copies of adoption certificates from the General
Register Office when sufficient particulars about the adoption are
supplied to enable the entry in the Adopted Children Register to be
correctly identified.
The information contained on an adoption certificate is as follows -
* The name of the adopted person, the date and location of their
birth and the sex of the child
* The name, address and occupation of the adopter(s)
* The date of the adoption order plus description of the court who
made the order
* Signature of the officer at GRO deputed by the Registrar General to
attest the entry
There is nothing on the GRO index to indicate an adoption so I would imagine that any re-registration would appear on the Adopted Children Register held by the GRO which presumably is not accessible to the public.

If you can afford the cost, you could apply for a copy of the first of those birth certificate.
As far as I know, there is no such thing as "deregistered" according to ex registrars

Not sure if this will help.
1939 Register.29 September 1939 I did a bit of juggling with the results after a search for Elsie Lovell.
I don`t have FindMyPast to see the full details. This might be Elsie.
Taunton 1939. These people are at the same address
Elsie I Lovill b 1901
Frank I Lovell 1876
Fanny F Lovell 1880. (Mmn Edwards)
2 people officially closed. Can`t find who they were.
1911 has Elsie born Cardiff, she has 2 brothers 3 sisters.
Births Mar 1902 Lovell Elsie Ida

Wilcoxon
What were you looking at on the 1939? I can see four people listed none of them closed. Fanny F Lovell born in 1880 plus husband and two daughters one of whom is Elsie.
-
If you search the free index for the 1939 - Elsie I Lovill 1901 it mentions Frank & 2 more on the record. It also states that there 3 closed records as well.
I would take this entry to mean Elsie I & Frank & 2 more and 3 closed records (7 in all)
-
Ah interesting. The transcription makes no mention of any closed records but the original image has three in between two other names.
-
By working round you can see the three people. Then on all pages , 3 are locked.

Are you allowed to post that image?

Not sure, I didn`t pay to view it, anyone can do a free search.
I can`t remove them.
I`m sure a moderator will advise on this if needed.

I believe that the Terms and Conditions prohibit publication on here.
May be an idea for you to report your own post o the moderator, I suggest

The mother was institutionalised there .
It looks as if the "workhouse" days were over by 1940, it was a hospital from 1929.
Lots of old large workhouse buildings were used in that way. Elsie probably wouldn't have been "sent to the workhouse" as we would say.
