Title: Family Name Palmer/Neilson
Post by: k1yak on Saturday 20 August 16 19:15 BST (UK)
Good Evening I was wondering if someone can help.

I'm looking for the Palmer family in Ireland its a bit of a puzzle.

The three names are Samuel Palmer Born act 1872 in Ireland but not sure.
His father is called Samuel Palmer  I know he died before 1895.
Mother Margaret Jane Neilson.  She was in Coatbridge Scotland 1911.  (She maybe called Peggy Jane or Maggie Jane)  The only one I have found was one that was married to a John Lamont!!!!.
I can't find a link with them all apart from Samuel Palmer Jr's Marriage certificate in Coatbridge in 1895.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Thank You.
Gayle

I can’t find a Palmer=Neilson marriage in Northern Ireland 1854 to 1874 on the GRONI site, nor can I find any children born to parents named Palmer & Neilson, 1864 to 1874.

Samuel Palmer is a common enough name and there are 6 or 7 marriages in the period 1854 to 1874 but all to women with different surnames. No John Palmer marriages though.

The Samuel Palmer whose death is recorded in 1894 seems to have left a will. He died 26th Dec 1893 and was a farmer at Lislea, Armagh. He leaves everything to his wife's cousin Nenah Palmer who resides with him with the proviso that his wife Margaret 'may have enjoyment of the produce and profits thereof during her lifetime'. Nenah was the executrix and is described as a spinster. No sign of her in 1901 and there is a death recorded in Armagh in 1896 of a Nena Palmer age 23.

It just doesn't all add up yet  :-\

No suitable Samuel Palmer birth 1865-1878 in GRONI's database (covers all 6 N.I. counties)
No suitable marriage for a Samuel or John Palmer with wife Margaret in N.I.

So, a few questions which might help us find the family in Ireland...

1) what's listed for birthplaces of Samuel Palmer, his mother Margaret Jane and brother John? Often that census is the one which lists a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland'

2) I managed to find margaret Janes death certificate.  And that says her husband was a John Palmer???  Her mother was called Mary Harvey.
Father's name? Margaret's age? who was the informant?

3) have you searched for the family in 1891 Scottish census?

4) numerous online family trees give Samuel's mother as Margaret Ann. They could be mistaken, copied from each other, etc. but have you tried contacting others interested in the family?

Hi,
I did an open search for Palmer and Neilson on 3 sites and got
Samuel Palmer born 1806 to William Palmer and Margaret Neilson in Scotland.
Mary 1809
John 1811.
Other were in the USA and 1993 to 2003 in Northumberland.
Is this the family?

Thank everyone for your help,

Samuel Palmer aged 24 in 1895. Married Kate Wood in Coatbridge Samuels father is noted as Samuel a farm labourer deceased. 4th October. Both Samuels from Ireland

On Margaret Jane Palmers death certificate in 1920 in Coatbridge. Husband is named John Palmer.  Maybe there was a mix up as it was her son John that registered the certificate.

What about details from the census records (especially 1911)?

And how do you know Margaret's mother was Mary Harvey, etc.?

The Will (original destroyed but shows scanned image of wording copied at the time) for Samuel Palmer of Armagh is available from http://apps.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

The Will of Samuel Palmer late of Lislea County Armagh Farmer who died 26 December 1893 at same place was proved at Armagh by Nenah Palmer of Lislea Spinster the sole Executrix.

Put Samuel Palmer into search box (above one is the first result) then click on 'image.'

You still haven't answered any questions about samuel Palmer, and his mother, in census records  :-\
