i have found a will of my relative for 1993 on ancestry what i would like to find out is on ancestry will it name every one listed in the will , what info will i find out on ancestry my subscription just ran out on monday so im not sure if i should pay the money to join for another month just to see this will
-
You could apply for a copy of the will DIRECT from HMCTS (at York I believe)
-
but would ancestry have the same info as in all names mentioned
-
If you go here https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills and type in the name you are interested in you will see the same info as will be on Ancestry. The actual will is not shown, you have to send for that, not sure of cost as I have not sent for 1 for a while. The gov website & Ancestry only show an index to the wills.
Hope that helps.

Hi
I think this link should tell you what the record would contain
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1904

What you've found on Ancestry is probably an index not the actual Will (see Gadget's link).
You can search for and order the will here- (see lubylou's link)
https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate
If you still wish to use Ancestry check to see if your local library makes it available onsite.

From my understanding; Ancestry recently added more probate records to their collection. These records can be found online for free at https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills (https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills) as others have said.
A 1993 probate generally includes name, address, date of death, type of probate, date of probate, how much money the deceased had left (sometimes not exceeding) as well as the folio number.
With this information you can order the will for £10 on the probate site.

i have clicked on all links and nothing for him

i have clicked on the last link given and still not there

I've just checked on both sites for my mother's probate. I know she wrote a will and it went through probate (as a joint exec, I signed various docs for my sister to admin). Her name doesn't appear on either site.
It could be that the estate has to be over a certain value. I know that Mum didn't leave very much.

Added - now found - I made a typo with her first name :-[

That's interesting. Sometimes you will need to check a few years from the death year as the probate may have happened in a different year.
-
Wills are not always probated the same year of death so go back to the government site and search in 1993, etc.
If you still don't find the record then post the name and any other details such as location and we can try to find him in the government database so that you can decide if you want to order the Will.

My cousin died in 2012 and her will is on the probate site. I know her and her husband were rich - they owned property at Sandbanks, Dorset, but I don't know how many assets/money she had of her own. I haven't bought the will as it seems like prying into their business. Getting wills from 1700s and 1800s feels quite different.

The Govt site, using the Advanced Search, allows a search on death year regardless of probate year. I ahve a few instances when I've searched that way and found the probate was 4 years later in some cases.

i have found it in the next year but it doesnt give any info as in names etc just address and probate leeds then a number , will this be the only info ancestry will have , will i have to order the actual will to see all names etc , if so can i do it over the phone ?
-
Best to order the will itself via the government site. You can do it online.

i have just added it to my basket , not sure if iv done it wright , so am i right in thinking ancestry will not have any names on there site ?
-
Ancestry has an index not the actual Will. There are no shortcuts to seeing the bequests.
-
ok thank you i will get the will , but can i just ask he died in grimsby but the probate was in leeds is that normal ? for grimsby
-
When I was involved in sorting out someone's estate and applied for probate ( this was about 1996) myself and the other executor chose the probate office to attend. We chose one that suited us and involved the shortest distance for us both to drive to rather than the one nearest to where the person who had died lived. In our case the probate office as about 100 miles from where the person, whose estate we were sorting out, had lived.
-
but i know that the small amount of family he had as in wife and child all lived in grimsby , thats why i am asking is it normal to die in grimsby and probate to be in leeds or could it be someone contasted the will ???
-
im sorry i just dont understand any thing at all about wills and probate
-
It doesn't matter where they lived, most major towns have a local Probate Office for you to attend, but the Probate comes under the main office for the area. For example, I took the oath and signed for probate at the office at the County Court in Bournemouth, Dorset, but the probate comes under Winchester, Hampshire.

Here's a link to the HMCTS site which explains about wills if you are the next of kin or executor applying to probate someone's will
https://www.gov.uk/wills-probate-inheritance/overview
It will give an overview as to what happens
Here's a link also from HMCTS but on their 'apply for a copy will' section whcih explains what you are seeing when you search for a will
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Support/Help
Hope these help
-
thank you , for the help
-
Before you apply for the document PLEASE make sure that the entry is for a Probate (where there is a will) and not an Administration where there is no will.
-
all i did was find his will then added it to my basket , have i done it correctly ? also i want the will posted to me and not accessed on line , but the link above hear says they provide a link to view on line , i dont want that i realy dont know what im doing
-
Before you do anything else, open a new tab or window and go here
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#calendar
do your search again and find the correct entry
Have a look at the image for the details to make sure it says Probate not adminstration.
Once you have confirmed there is a probate and a will continue with your purchase.
HMCTS no longer send wills in the post, in approx 5 working days they will send you an email which contains a pdf of the document. You then have 30 days to save that document to your computer before HMCTS delete your application from the system.
If you are still ahving problems then send me the name on a personal message and I will check it for you.
