My great great great grandmother and daughter died a day or so after arrival in NZ in 1852.
Her husband died 5 years later. He was a Fencible. Two sons were 9 and 12yrs old, and two aged 18 and 20yrs. If willing, would the elder brothers have been able to raise the younger brothers, or would they have been taken into care?

This Auckland newspaper item makes mention of Roman Catholic orphanage establishments in 1858......

Would you like to provide some names? as we may be able to find something relating to your ancestors and their upbringing.

Thank You Minniehaha .... Louis James Haddon and Andrew Haddon are the younger brothers. Charles is 20, and Robert 18, but he dies in 1860

Mmmm....... Hunterville, Otago. I wonder if that is correct?

Minnie, that is what the NZ Death Index 1848 to 1964 states on the Ancestry website. Looking at the tree it is also stated that he came to NZ with his three brothers. Born Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. No parents are mentioned nor brothers names. Marriage 1874.

The Electoral Rolls:
1896 Waikato - Andrew Haddon, Labourer, Taupiri, Louis John Haddon, Farmer
1900 As above
1905-1906 Andrew Haddon, Farmer, Charles, Labourer and Louis John Haddon, Farmer
That is the last time that Louis John Haddon appears on the Roll;

Maybe this is Andrew's death with the alternate spelling
1915/2961 Hadden Andrew 67Y
Cheers Janette

Buried in the Taupiri lawn cemetery

I wonder if the alternate spelling was used? - as checking out the NZ Cities and Area Directories, for Louis, the surname is Hadden

Re Hunterville, Otago. I wasn't doubting you KHP. Truly...... ;D
I missed the "NZ Death Index" bit but saw "Ancestry" and thought perhaps someone had submitted incorrect information. And obviously my place name knowledge is lacking. :P

Didn't think you were Minnie ... I think getting the Death Printout will reveal the right place of death ... I can't seem to find a place of death for him on the locator, and I have done a soundex look. Unless he is one of the unknown ones on the link that Janette gave?
Cheers

-
In saying that he was one of the unknown ones at Taupiri, then that explains why it wouldn't be on the locator when the transcribing was done ;D
Cheers

ADDED: The thought did cross my mind that perhaps he was holiday in the South Island when he died, hence the Registration area.

Thanks everyone ... My posts need to be more precise so that I am not causing folks to search for info that I have long had. I am interested about what happened to the young brothers between their Dads death in 1857, and the time Louis marries Rangiora. Robert died in 1860 so only Charles would have been on hand - hopefully.
Interestingly the three surviving sons married Maori women, the two younger ones settling in Taupiri - Andrew, and my gt get grandfather Louis.
Backtracking beyond their parents wedding and early years in Tipperary is the the fence I find difficult to climb

Hi huriteAO,
it often helps us form a better picture of what we are looking for if we post the information we have found, could you tell us the names of the parents please?
Cheers Janette

Regarding the earlier mention of the death registration place (Hunterville, Otago) of Louis James HADDON in 1905, curiosity got the better of me and I went hunting.........[ ::) ::)]
The death was registered in the third quarter of 1905 at HUNTLY, in the registration district of AUCKLAND.

Someone stretched out the "Hunt" part ;D

Hi there I too am a descendant of Louis and rangiora . Did you ever manage to find what you were looking for ? I think many of us are in the same boat to find info behind their marriage. However they are both buried in taupiri
-
Yes I did thanks Eva. Charles looked after his younger brothers. They moved to Taupiri which is where they found their wives.
