Yes, I believe he was and based on Mary's age of 72 at death in 1898, she was born in 1826.

Hi
The name caught my eye. My ancestor also arrived on board the Brothers and had a Felgate couple as witnesses on her marriage in Melbourne.
Yes I realize that you have Filgate and I have written Felgate but I have found the names interchangeable.
James and Margaret Jamieson and their children disembarked along with my ancestor Frances Thurtle Jamieson. Within 2 years they were all in Victoria.
I am wondering if your Richard had a brother John with a wife Margaret who settled in Bendigo?
Regards
Elizabeth

Again, I can't thank you all enough for your help so far!
just a quick question I have also in the tree a Jonathon Filgate (from Clare, S.Aust) married to Fanny Gleeson whose daughter Harriet Sarah also marries a Richardson (William Brutton Richardson, who is a brother of Frederick George and Charles Houghton.... ) I haven't got any marriage details yet for Jonathon and Fanny but I have been wondering if there can be a link between the 2 Filgates, Richard and Jonathon.......
Just found the marriage Jonathon to Fanny: FILGATE Jonathan, 34, married GLEESON Fanny Eliza, 24, on 6 December 1854 at St Barnabas, Clare but no fathers name for Jonathon
Thanks again lots of information to take in.....

It looks like 3 filgate brothers came in the 1850's as well as their cousin Jonathan Filgate so lt looks like more searching

Cheran, where are you getting your information from? Whose the 3rd brother and how do you know Jonathan is a cousin?
The Filgate lads seem to have gone to great lengths to keep parents names to themselves.
Jonathan died in 1866 of typhoid fever aged 46. No folks on death Reg.
William died 1896 aged 83. No folks on death Reg.
Jonathan cemetery plaque, click on search on website: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01i6h/
Note that the Filgates are interred with the Gleeson's, then see E. B. Cleeson with William in 1850: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01i6j/

Thanks Jamjar
I am hoping I am not misleading..... When I looked back over the family recollections, I am not sure if 2 families are getting mixed together, I think it may be the 2 sisters marrying into the Richardson family and a cousin also marrying into the Richardson family...
Thanks for info on Jonathon.

To learn more about FILGATE and RICHARDSON associations, including the cordial factory, type this into the search box at Trove-
"filgate richardson"~20
Then filter by SA and the years that interest you.

Thanks Sue
I have noted these errors, the same error is on the Frederick George Richardson which records that his wife "Amy" is the daughter of Jonathon.
I am thinking that Amy is short for Amelia Jane who in fact is the daughter of Richard.... as is Eleanor Mary.... the marriage record in the paper has "Amy" as Richard's 2nd daughter
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/39265478?searchTerm=filgate amy&searchLimits=l-category=Family+Notices|||l-decade=187
I think my next step is to possibly find Jonathon on the 1841 Census.....
I do appreciate all the work everyone is doing to try and solve the puzzle....
