Hello,
I'm looking for some help with James Sanders who lived at Hoathwaite with his wife Mary and family. He died in December 1850, aged 82, and is buried at St Luke's, Torver. He and his family spent some time in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, but are buried at St Luke's alongside their 3 sons, John (1814-1842), William (twin to Thomas, b.Ashbourne 1816 d.Torver 1861) and Thomas (twin to William b.Ashbourne 1816 d.Torver 1899). Their eldest child, Jane (1812-1832) is buried in St Luke's, but what is puzzling is that she is buried in the same grave as a Jane Gibson of Hoathwaite who died in 1839 aged 55. I haven't been successful in finding a link between the Sanders family and Jane Gibson so far.
James and Mary's youngest daughter, Sarah was born in Ashbourne in 1818, married William Barratt in 1843 and lived at Holly How, Church Coniston. She died in 1887 and is buried in St Luke's graveyard with her husband.
As it stands, James and the Sanders line are a dead end so any information on the family would be very much appreciated!!

Such a small church yard have you checked to see if it is a private plot or a public grave
also do you know if there was a headstone on the grave

It might be interesting to have a look at Jane's
death certificate
Registration district Ulverston,March 1838
to see if any of the Sanders/Saunders family registered her death

November 12th 1842
on the 6th i s ant, after a few days illness,to the deep regret of his relations and friends.
John eldest son of James Sanders,of Hoathwaite in Torver, aged 33 or 35.
His death was occasioned by a small piece of decayed wood piercing the forefinger of his right hand
which brought on lock jaw and spasms
you have his burial
Both parents deaths are in the Westmorland gazette

Thanks for that Radcliff.
I've seen pictures of both the Sanders family grave and Jane's grave online and have seen the obituaries in the Westmorland Gazette via British Newspaper Archives. The main problem I'm having is James' background. The only census he appears on is the 1841 which only says that he wasn't born in Lancashire. I'd love to find out if he had any brothers or sisters and who his parents were but so far no luck. Fingers crossed for a breakthrough!!

I see he wasn't born in Lancashire
this explains why I found no trace of him in earlier church records
where was he married
Derbyshire ?
-
That's a good question Radcliff!!
I have the baptism records for his youngest 3 children (William, Thomas and Sarah) who were all baptised at St Oswald in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. James' occupation is given as a mail guard at the time. I haven't been able to find records for his eldest two children, Jane and John, at the same church. There's a website which mentions the Sanders' and it suggests that James Sanders married Mary Turner at All Saints, Derby (the Cathedral) on 26 December 1811. This would fit but unfortunately records there state only that both were of the parish.
I guess James' Will might give information about more family members?

Knowing James Sanders was not local to Torver,
makes me think how did he land up there,I know the area well,
I wonder if his wife was from here
plenty of Turners around Blawith and Lowick

Hi
Have you considered the Royal Mail Archives?
Ir he was a mail guard he should have received a pension and hopefully that will be linked to where he was first employed.
As for the Gibson family in he village.
There's John Gibson blacksmith who married Agnes Taylor 11.5.1794 Colton.
Both buried at Torver 5.1.1844 born 1772 and 14.4.1850 born 1765.
Children John 30.8.1795,Isabella 10.3.1798 and Nicholas 10.5.1801 over at Ireleth.
Jane is living at the same address so I'd guess she's the wife of John junior.
This may be John in 1841 at Dalton in Furness.
John Gibson balcksmith 45 y
Francis Turner ag lab 15 y
Thomas Turner ag lab 15 y
Hannah Berry f S 20 y
There is a possibility that Jane Gibson was earlier a Miss Turner
Jane Turner d of John baptised 25.1.1784 born 1.12.1783 Heywood
Mary Turner d of John also at Heywood 25.2.1775 and bapt 1 March
could e a connection.
But I'm also a bit worried about that marriage at Derby James would 43 and Mary 35 when they got married ,could either have been married before?

I was wondering the same Radcliff. The 1841 census does say that she was born in the County so more than possible and it maybe explains why they settled in Torver?
Thanks for that ciderdrinker. I have done a search on the Royal Mail archives which are available on Ancestry to see if there are any records of a James Sanders but no luck. I did read somewhere that mail guards were often ex-soldiers so maybe this is another avenue to follow?
The marriage in Derby worries me slightly too and I'm not sure it is the right one. If I could find baptism records for the first two children, that would help but still no luck!! I'll have to look into what options are available for getting a copy of James Sanders' will. Unfortunately not handy for the archives!!

If you contact Lancashire Archives they will tell you the cost for a copy of James' will and will send you the copy.

Not the end of the line. there are many Sanders from the same family in Ulverston. My mother was a Sanders. Will post more info at a later date.
I think the family moved to the area because James was a miner
-
Thanks Woodsand!!
I know there are lots of Sanders and Saunders around the area, my tree can get a bit confusing because it includes both! I look forward to seeing what info you have and whether it fits in with my findings so far.
Cheers :)

Hi, I was wondering if you found out anything else? I'm also stuck on him!

Hi queen of da norf,
No, I’ve not had much luck finding anything else out about James Sanders. Still struggling to find a marriage or baptisms for his children, John and Jane. His will did mention another son, Henry, but again I’ve not managed to find anything on him either. If you don’t mind me asking, which branch of James’ family are you descended from?
Thank you for the burial records, Garstonite :)
-
I married into the family, it's James' son William's branch, James, William, Thomas, Bryan...They all still live in Ulverston. Which branch are you from?

I'm added this information to see if anyone out there has managed to find anything or is also looking for information on James Sanders (b.1768 ish)
When I originally posted my query I knew very little about him and still don't know where he was born. However I believe he married Mary Dixon at St Bees Priory in 1801. He was a 35 year old husbandman of Netherby, Longtown and Mary was 25 and resident in Whitehaven. I suspect Mary's family have connections to Torver and that is how they ended up there.
Prior to living in Torver it seems the family lived in Cheshire and Derbyshire which I'm guessing is because of James' work as a mail guard - I found a newspaper article dated 31 Dec 1819 which originally came from the Chester Chronicle and mentioned an injury to 'James Saunders the guard of the mail between Derby and Northampton' following an accident (given that the spelling Sanders seems to vary and often appears as Saunders I'm going along with this being the right man).
I'd love to find out where James was from so that I can grow my tree. As always, any help would be great
