Title: Ancestry.co.uk
Post by: BumbleB on Wednesday 27 July 16 16:16 BST (UK)
Is it just me, or have Ancestry done something overnight?

I have Ancestry as a bookmark, and all I usually do, from Google Chrome, is start to type Anc.. and up comes the connection, and I just hit return and it takes me to the Home page.

No longer, I now can't bring up the Home Page at all, even if I can get into Ancestry via another route.

Why didn't I just ring them in the first place?   It's a problem at their end.  :o :o

It's been rather clunky & slow to log me off today, and a bit odd otherwise, but I have it as a favourite for quick access.

Yes, that's basically what I have.  Anyway it's a fault at their end, and they are working on it.

Hi All,

Glad you said it was a problem their end as I cannot access the site at all. Was starting to think it was my pc that was the issue.

It's possibly a bigger problem than my initial enquiry, but they are aware of it/them, and are working to rectify.

I am one of those affected too - been following/contributing on their facebook page where asked name of internet provider, etc.   But there is no rhyme of reason to it - my cousin has exactly same set-up as me - Windows 10, Edge and via BT - and everything working as normal for her!   Have tried on my phone, tablet as well and results the same.   Signed out and in again.  Can eventually get onto site but the minute I click on 'Search' it just freezes!   To say I'm miffed is an understatement - a days research wasted and out baby sitting tonight.   If it was a general site error affecting everyone I don't think I'd feel so bad somehow but when you one of a small number of individuals that seem to be 'stricken' it becomes more frustrating and you think 'why us'?

I have just spoken to them (I too have not had access all day). Lots of people affected like we are experiencing. In the main, failure to access any databases on the site overall. Customer Services advice that systems people are working on it but no update on progress or when it will be up an running as normal.

The only bit of the site I could access was my account profile which reminds me annual subs is due to renew tomorrow.... ::)

Is Rootsweb affected by this problem ?
I can't access Mailing List Archives Boards - when I try to open up a specific List I get "Internal Server Error". Has been like this for at least a week !

I am glad of Rootschat because I now know that other people are having problems and I am not alone, however I do feel that Ancestry should post details on their website when they are aware there is an issue.

Ancestry still down this morning, and a lot more people coming onto the Facebook page asking about it. Ancestry still asking people to clear cache / cookies and for their ISP, and for what error messages are being generated, clearly still have little idea of the cause.

I contacted them yesterday by email (couldn't load home page to get phone number, so couldn't phone them). I got a reply back this morning saying this:

"Due to regular maintenance and occasional site issues, our website may be down for  brief periods of time."

Not much help

Can now access home page but cannot open any records.

Thank goodness for this thread. I thought it was just me. Computer rebooted. BT Hub rebooted. Check browsers are up to date.

www.ancestry.co.uk is working fine but exactly the same, when I go to search records, or even start directly by typing in search.ancestry.co.uk, it just times out.

That's at home.

I'm having a sneaky look at work now, and search is working fine.

I wonder if it's actually a BT problem, and for some reason they've blocked search.ancestry.co.uk?

What I've not tried yet, is using ancestry.com. Will try that when I get home later!

As posted previously, I was another of those affected yesterday.   Was babysitting for my niece in another part of town last night - tried again on my tablet there and got onto Ancestry with no problem and everything worked (niece with Virgin but some of those affected were with Virgin).   Great, I thought, has been fixed.   However, once home around 11.30pm I tried again only to find it was exactly as it had been all day!!

Had tried various things on my PC yesterday none of which worked.  The only thing I hadn't done was restart the hub.    So, this I duly did and then lost the internet completely.   Hub light was blue showing all was supposedly well but couldn't connect to it.  So, I did another restart with the same result so my action had ended up with me losing the internet altogether.   The usual screen that pops up when I've lost internet connection hadn't popped up as usual (which does a check to locate problem and fix it) but after about half an hour it did.   Did it's thing and suddenly there I was back connected again.   Phew!

Before closing down PC for the night had one last go at getting into Ancestry and to my amazement was able to get in as usual and everything worked.  Then this morning I saw more comments on this thread and thought perhaps me getting through last night was just a blip - however, clicked on my link in favourites and straight through again.

I'm not in the least technical, and can't explain why so many of us were having problems yesterday (and today) and that 24 hours later Ancestry hasn't been able to fix it either.

If you haven't already done so, I can only suggest that you try restarting your router as I did.   Have absolutely no idea at all why this should have worked but it did and service with Ancestry now is back to normal.

I have just tried Ancestry, via BT Broadband.
I have no problems searching etc. However the following notice pops up across the top of the page:

"Note:  You may be experiencing some intermittent service with the Ancestry.co.uk website. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause and appreciate your patience as we work to resolve the problem as quickly as possible."

There seems no rhyme or reason to it - those affected using all different methods of access.  Mine being BT, Windows 10, Edge and living in Suffolk but my cousin with exactly the same setup also in Suffolk could still access with no problems.

All I know is that restarting my router/hub (even thought I lost internet for half an hour as a result) has fixed the problem for me.

If you get into Ancestry, does it make any difference if you "Sign Out and Sign in Again"?

Maybe the work on their website is restricting the number of users who can search etc.

Could be something connected to the big Windows 10 update next week? Hope not that will mean more problems for us!

Not frustrating AT all...

No problems at all here but I'm wondering if it's something similar to what happened last week with the BT service - DNS, pings, dropped packets etc. (I've given up techie!). Many sites and places reported similar experiences as many of you have - I couldn't get into quite a few sites (e.g. Guardian, Met Office). Checked up on the Downtime site and BT got it finally resolved. I think it was something that had gone wrong with their main gateway in North London. I've just checked and there are more complaints about various sites today.

Note it was the lines/connections not just BT customers.

Just a thought.

Gadget

ADDED - I remember that the Met Office had put up a notice similar to the Ancestry one.
