Title: Patrick Connolly & Martha Bradley of Owenreagh, Ballinascreen
Post by: mcghee67 on Tuesday 26 July 16 21:25 BST (UK)
Looking for information on the following family Patrick Connolly married Martha
Bradley near Drapers Town around 1864, they had the following children Francis, 1865, William 1867, Twins Jane and Daniel 1868, Bridget 1870, Mary Ann? and Martha Teresa, the mother died around 1875 and the children were put into care supposedly in Glenties Workhouse, It is known that Martha Theresa was adopted by Nahor Boyle, Merchant Ardara, but don't know who adopted the others,
Jane, Daniel and Francis emigrated to America, Martha Theresa married Con Kennedy, Ardara, Bridget married RIC Constable John Rafferty and left for London, its Mary Ann and William I am stuck on, according to the census their father Patrick was still living in 1901  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000642531/, also can't find death records for Patrick and Martha, if anybody can find anything elso on this family I would be most greatful

Many Thanks Jane (I have modified this message I originally wrote Bridget as the wife of Patrick rather than Martha, thanks to Aghadowey for sorting this out)

Had posted a really long reply here and it has vanished just before I posted so instead of looking everything up again and typing it all out will give you the gist of it so that you can follow it all up.

Mother's name was Martha not Bridget Bradley and she seems to have died in 1874 a few days after Martha Theresa was born- you can view the death certificate on GRONI's site after registering and purchasing a few credits.

Five children listed on GRONI and most of them in extracted Irish births on LDS site- no Daniel (supposed to be Jane's twin) and no Mary Ann. All the births, and mother's death, took place in Magherafelt registration district which covers Draperstown.

Draperstown is about 80 miles via modern roads to Ardara so it seems strange that the children would have ended up there very soon after 1874.

The online (free) records for Ballynascreen Catholic Parish start 1825 (baptisms and marriages) so you'll be able to search for more information there-

Not sure if the Patrick Connolly you found in 1901 census is yours-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Sixtowns/Owenreagh/1544577

According to the death for Martha Connolly I found she was born c1835 but the Patrick in 1901 born c1845 (although census ages are notorious for being incorrect).

Still mulling over the Patrick Connolly in Owenreagh so I checked the Valuation Revision Books  for the property-
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/searching-valuation-revision-books

1899-1915 book (page 49/57)
4C Patrick Connolly house & land
1916-1923 boon (page 36/52)
4C Patck Connolly house & land, 1922- house vacant, 1923 changed to Charles McKenna offices & land (in other words house probably wasn't in great shape so made into some sort of office housing)

That Patrick Connolly could have died or moved elsewhere.

Here's that Patrick in 1911-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/The_Six_Towns/Owenreagh/610713
Birthplace transcribed as Moyard, Co.Down but I think it's Moyard in Ballynascreen Parish, Co.Derry

Thankyou so so much Gaffy you must have great eyesight and it must have taken good lot of your time up, I had all the children including John and Mary Ann but when I went back to look for their dates of birth I couldn't find those two, I also thought it was a little strange that Jane and Daniel names weren't together.

Kind Regards Jane

Just got home and see that you've altered the name of Patrick's wife from Bridget to Martha in your original post and it's also been changed at some point after my posts in the title. Your original post did give her name as Bridget (which is the name I started searches with) and it was only when I could not find any of the children that I did very broad searches and found the name was actually Martha not Bridget.

This was discussed only recently on another thread about posters editing things which then can make later posts look silly. We all make mistakes and have to go back and make edits at times but if you need to do so for some reason (other than things like simple spelling errors which do not change the meaning of what you've posted) please indicate what you've modified to make the thread less confusing.

Following up the Valuation Revision Books (see reply #3) but going back in time now- Owenreagh
1884-1898
1a Patrick Connolly house & garden (30 perches), changed to Chas. McKenna in 1898 (that name appears later)
   4C added 1898- Patrick Connolly

1880-1883
   1a Patrick connolly

1864-1879
1a Andrew Bradley changed to Patrick Connolly in 1874

Now, 1874 is the year your Martha (Bradley) Connolly died but that still doesn't explain any of the children ending up in Glenties Workhouse if the father was still living in Owenreagh.
