This search from the Public Records Office Victoria might be helpful.
http://prov.vic.gov.au/search_results?searchid=42&format=freetext&FamilyName=ranger&GivenName=thomas&Ship=&Destination=&Month=0&Monthto=0&Year=0&Yearto=0&SearchSortField1=&SearchRecords=25&x=0&y=0
Then perhaps try Papers Past for old NZ newspapers as often back then they printed passenger lists.

If you try searching specifically for 'RANGER' on the PROV link provided by Mirl above you'll find two results, although neither are for voyages to New Zealand.

Hi Pomkwi,
The problem with trans-Tasman migration is that unlike passengers on the long-distance immigrant ships, passengers between Australian and New Zealand posts were rarely named in newspaper reports unless they paid their passage or were otherwise VIP-ish.
