I have an ancestor that was born in Hammett SQUARE and not Street in 1842. Does anyone know where HAMMETT SQUARE was or is??
Thanks in advance

What was the registration district, please?

Taunton Somerset. Apologies if I have posted in the wrong place.

It appears in 1841 prior to Church Square & Magdalene Lane and after Melody(?) Buildings

So presumably the enumerator turned left onto Magdalene St then headed towards Church Square.
Hammet Sqare doesn't seem to be marked on any of the NLS maps, but there are some 'open areas' where it could be located.
Looking closer at the enumerator's route might narrow it down a bit and you may be ale to make an educated guess as to its location even if it is not marked on any maps.

From the enumerator's instructions:
"Fore Street including Batts Court as far as the pig market and Hunts Court except that part of it which is in Bishops Hull Parish. Hammet Street - Church Square - Magdalen Lane - Barings Buildings - Melody Buildings - Hammet Place and Hammet Square to the boundary of St Mary Magdalen parish in
Black Boy Lane"

There are only a few of those places on maps I looked at Shaun.
There are a lot of 'Courts' in the area but none of those I saw were named, nor were Lanes, Squares (apart from Church Square) or Places. :-\
Someone else might have better luck hunting them down. :)

Black Boy Lane is now Magdalene Street. So ..between Melody Buildings and Magdalene Street on that 1:500 map?

At both ends of Melody Buildings there are open areas (courtyards?) either of which I suppose could Hammett Square.
It is a shame I can't find a map with more detail.
Here is Magdalene Lane:

Thank you all for your help. Viewing the map I was sent I can see that East Street runs to the rear. My gggrandad`s wife Elisa was born there. Also Paul Street and Upper High Street all had a members of my family at one time. Will be popping down to Taunton in a couple of weeks so I am grateful for the information. Best wishes and regards to you all.

It will probably be much changed looking at the shops around the area today, however there are sure to be some buildings from your ancestor's time still standing, so you may be able to get a feel for the place. Enjoy your time in Taunton. :)
