Many thanks for taking the time to do some work on it.  It looks much better.  I just realised that I scanned it as PDF not JPEG.  Don't know if that makes a difference or not?

Must admit that I'm not sure myself. Try again as a jpg at a high resolution.

I think you are most probably right, Japeflakes.

For a brief few minutes this morning, this appeared on the board as a jpg. I just happened to d/load it before it disappeared. I had another play with it...
If anyone fancies a play with it... please feel free to use my clean up, or the original in the following post.

Hi Kate, I think the other versions are probably better but this my very first attempt at digital photo restoration. There's a whole lot I still need to learn but for what they're worth, these are the versions I came up with in a five minutes.

Hi Mike

Many thanks for taking the time to restore my photo to such high standard. Greatly appreciated, Kate

Glad you like them, Kate. Gives me bit of confidence to do more. I noticed a few specks on the color version that were easy to remove that I forgot to do. So I've removed them on this version (2 minutes work).

Folks, there's something I want to correct and clarify in my original post below.

I worked (briefly) on two versions of Kate's photos:
- the orginal posting.jpg (B&W, downloaded and reposted by HandyPandy)
- the excellent colour version (Dad and me at Leysdown 7 col.jpg) created by HandPandy

When saving my Photoshop files back in JPG, I saved them as 'original posting (mike)' and - unfortunately - 'me and my dad colour (mike)'. In posting, I should have made it clear that 'me and my dad colour (mike)' was HandyPandy's colour photo with just a few additional (minor) adjustments.

The wording of my post, together with the renamed file, may well have given the impression that I was claiming the color version as my own work. This is untrue and was genuinely unintentional. I should (even so late at night!) have taken more care when posting and attributing the careful work on the colour photo to HandyPandy. I apologise to him and others for my lack of attention/care when posting.

This also clarifies the 'five minutes' in my post. I in no way meant to suggest that a full (colour) restoration could be done in 5 minutes! This is skilled and careful work that takes much more time. I don't have these skills but I hope to develop them over time. So my only (quick) contribution to this thread was to remove any remaining 'specks' or 'lines' that I saw in the original B&W version or in HandyPandy's colour version. To do this, I used Photoshop's 'context aware spot healing' tool which - magically - removes 'imperfections' just by clicking on them. I also quickly adjusted the contrast on the B&W version.

I apologise for any wrong impressions that I may have given and I will take more care in future.

Mike

Mike... no need to burst a blood vessel  ;D but I appreciate the credit.

Blood vessels are fine. Credit where credit's due ;)
