Title: Elizabeth's Surname
Post by: rebeccaclaire86 on Friday 15 July 16 08:45 BST (UK)
Morning all,

I found this marriage licence that appears to refer to my ancestors Richard Gill and Elizabeth - it's from 1633 so is quite tricky to read.  I cannot quite make out Elizabeth's surname, my best guess would be Leakis or similar but would really appreciate some help!  I have left a few lines of the surrounding text so you can see the style of writing a bit better.

Thanks in advance,

Becky

it looks to me like it ends in ie, the last letter matches the 2nd e in Elizabeth and the 2nd letter in the surname, my guess would be either Leakie or Lehie.

My guess would be LEAKIE - but it might be useful to see the whole of the entry.

Agree.......and a search of the area for that particular surname may help....although it may not  ???

Thanks all! I think Leakie may well be correct, I can see it now you've said it. I've had a quick look and it is a name that crops up a fair amount in Somerset (it's from the new parish registers on Ancestry, which will be keeping me busy for awhile!).

Thanks so much :)
