Post by: syljun on Monday 11 July 16 20:47 BST (UK)
Trying to pin down Evan Hopkin b. 1794. Particularly interested in his birthplace. I know that he is buried in Gileston. He died in 1880. Have searched for years and hope to bring to end.
Many thanks, Syljun

was he a blacksmith & married to Sarah? If so, his place of birth is given as Bridgend on the 1871 census.

Thanks Osprey, Once again he is laughing. Yes he was married to Sarah. Every Census had a different birthplace but after years of searching I still come back to him.
Thank you for your help. Syljun

have you eliminated the baptism in Tythegston 15 Oct 1793 of Evan, son of Rees & Catherine Hopkin? Baptised the same day as his sister Margaret.

Hi osprey, Thanks for pointing Evan bap 1893. He could be the one married to Sarah. If so he is not mine.
This has been a long standing search. The only one of children born to Thomas and Frances Hopkin I cannot account for, bap 31/10/1802 together on same day as his brother Edward at St. Illtyd,Llantwit Major.
I have the 1851 Census of Glamorgan on disc and have been through every Hopkin(s) household without finding him and have not found a death, although brother Edward died two months after baptism. I am thinking Evan was older than new born when baptised as it was common for children to be baptised together.
Will have to put him on back burner again. So frustrating.
Thank you for replying, Syljun

I can find the Edward baptism you refer to but not the Evan(just me probably). However there is a John Hopkin, son of Thomas and Frances, baptised Llantwit Major 1794.Could this be an anglicised
version? But why would there be a second baptism?

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger, I have the Glamorgan F.H.S. booklet and a few of surrounding Villages. All in alphabetical order. Evan just below Edward.
I believe according to wikipedia that John is an anglised name for Evan but I have both these names in several of welsh branches as brothers so would not think it was a second baptism.
Thank you for your time and interest, perhaps one day I'll find an answer. Syljun
