Title: searching query - Glasgow
Post by: Craigellachie2019 on Sunday 10 July 16 12:29 BST (UK)
Hello - can anyone give me advice on how I would find out if a couple who died 1950's and a decade earlier in Glasgow had any children?  I have tried putting the last name 'Salmond' in Scotlandspeople but between the years 1909 and say 1930 when I think any children may have been born, there are too many results.  William Salmond married Margaret McKerrall in 1909 in Glasgow. He lived in Vincent Street prior to their marriage and I believe at time of his death in 1951 had lived in Irongray? Street.  I have their birth, marriage and death certs - today for some reason my computer won't let me open their profiles to get exact dates and addresses to put in here.  I believe they may have used the names Bill and Maggie.  I can't find them in the 1911 census either.  William was born in 1871 and Margaret in 1872.  Thanks in advance for any hints on how to find out about any children.

You could try with surname beginning with Salmon as the "d" may not have been picked up.

There is 1 match on 1911 for a William Salmond with "Second Person Forename" as Margaret in "County/City" Glasgow City but haven't searched "District"

I didn't use "Age Range", I left it blank!

Which district in Glasgow was the marriage please?

"Age Range" 35 to 50 brings up 2 matches

Hi - thanks for this.  The area was 'Anderston' on their marriage in 1909.  When Margaret died in 1940 their address was 20 Ronald Street and the area was Townhead.

The 2 matches for 1911 are coming up for Angus & Dundee City.

Do you know of any connection with either area?

What was William's mother's maiden name please?

A step relation of Williams married a Macdonald in Australia who had come out from Angus. Thats the only connection with Angus i am aware of and no real connection. Williams mother was Jean or Jane Boak Gartshore. She married an Aitken and had 2 daughters. She then married Peter Salmond and had William. They went to Australia in 1886 with two of Peters sons from his previous marriage and his granddaughter and Janes daughter who married one of the sons prior to leaving Scotland but some returned to Coatbridge by 1901 census and then Glasgow.

I looked for a William Salmond with no 2nd person & there is 1 aged 48 in Glasgow City, Calton (Glasgow)

This may be him although age is out & could be a transcription error on the index (which does happen).

Looking at this, Calton & Anderston were neighbouring areas......

Margaret may have been with her parents if she'd had a baby or due to have?

Just looking at possibilities & this would give Williams status & also his occupation & most probably his exact place of birth which should correspond with what you have.

ADDED....Sorry, crossed post  ::)

Another thing I can think of is that whoever registered his death may have his mother's maiden name as Boag rather than Boak.....just another avenue  ???

Thank you Graham_of_that_ilk - yes I have all of that.  I have been to the cemetery in Townsville, Queensland, Australia where Jane and she and Peter Jnr's four children are buried.  They are buried opposite my Macdonald family.

There are no deaths on SP for surname Sa*mon* with mms M*k*r*l but if there were children who died prior to 1974 the mms may not have been added to the index yet.
