My 2nd great grandfather was Robert Quine who immigrated from the Isle of Man to Texas sometime in the 1850's. I believe he came to the USA with his mother and at least one brother. He married Suzanne Bassel in Texas. I am trying to find information on his ancestral origins.
Thanks,
Mike Wilson

Do you have his father's and mother's names?
Using www.imuseum.im, and checking for People named "Robert Quine", 1800-1861, gives 28 baptisms!
So, we need to narrow the field a little ;D
It's also worthwhile taking a look at ManxNoteBook (www.manxnotebook.com), which contains a wealth of information purtaining to the Isle of Man.
-
Is Robert Quine in Rochester, Monroe, New York in 1880 census?
His year of birth 1835, Isle of Man, both parents born Isle of Man. Widowed. Occupation; Stone mason.
Living with him daughter Jane Quine born 1866.
-
If that is your man, then:
Baptism, 18th October 1835, at Braddan parish
Robert Quine, son of Robert Quine and Jane (Kermode).

I posted earlier some information on my ancestor Robert Quine. I apologize for not putting additional information. I just searched for some data a cousin had and found his date of birth to be 3 Apr 1830. His mother's name is listed as Elinor Corlett and he had a brother by the name of John born abt. 1840 in Ballaugh, Isle of Man. I'm not certain how my cousin obtained the information.

Do you have Robert on any census' or his death?

I'm a bit confused about the William baptised with Robert. I thought perhaps Wm was actually Jn for John but it looks more like Wm for William. I can't find a baptism for a John or a burial of a William so I think they might be the same person. Perhaps William is a mistake? Or they later decided to call him John instead? Or maybe he was John William or William John?

QUINE, contraded from Mac Coinn, or Mac Cuinn, 'Conn's son' (Conn, 'counsel.') 'CONN, of the hundred fights,' was one of Ireland's greatest legendary heroes.
'MAC CUINN, son of Donnghaile, royal heir of Teathbha, died,' A.D. 1027.+
A.D. 1403, 'The king, to all, to whom, &c., greeting, Know that we have conceded of our especial grace, to LUKE MAC QUYN of the Island of Mann, scholar, certain alms called particles in the Island aforesaid, and which were given, confirmed, and conceded perpetually to the scholars by our predecessors, former Kings of England
Compare (Irish) QUIN, O'QUIN.
MAC QUYN [1403], QUINE [1504], QUYN [1511].

CORLETT (sometimes pronounced CURLEOD), is from the (O.N.) personal name Ţorljótr, (the initial c representing the Celtic prefix Mac.) The word 1jótr means 'deformed,' or ' ugly,' but that can scarcely be its meaning in this compound. Dr. Vigfusson thinks that ljót is the same as the old Teutonic leđd, 'people.' It is not found by itself in the Landnámabóc, though, in combination with Ţórr it is common there. In the Flateyjarbóc, written two centuries later, this compound name occurs twice. Ljótr is found on the cross in the old church-yard at Ballaugh in combination with Liut, as LIUTWOLF§.
'The name Thor has always been thought to sound well and is much used in proper names. Ţorljótr is found in many runic stones in Denmark. The MACLEODS in Scotland have always claimed a Scandinavian origin and their name is probably from Mac ljótr, the Ţor not having been inserted.'** "The MACLEODS of Cadboll and the MACLEODS of Lewis not only quarter the Manx trie cassyn (three legs,) but use the same motto quocunque jeceris stabit, which, I think, clearly points out that the chiefs of that name are descendants from the Norwegian sovereigns of Mann and the Isles, or some other Manx connection."++
In the parishes of Ballaugh and Lezayre nearly one fourth part of the population are CORLETTS.
Compare (Welsh) LLOYD.
CORLETT [1504], MACCORLEOT [1511], MACCORLEAT [1521], CURLEOD [1600], CORLOD [1629], CURLED [1666], CORLEOD [1677], CORLOT [1678], CORLET [1618].

Private Message:-
Thanks again great information. I just spoke with my cousin about all the research you've done and she is very impressed too. She told me some distant relatives said Eleanor's father was Daniel Corlett, from the Isle of Man. They say some of the family lived in Cuyahoga County Ohio. I found a Daniel Corlett born 1789 in the Isle of Man. He is on that county census in 1860. She also said Eleanor's mother was Alice Mylevorrey (not sure of the spelling). I didn't find a record of her. This is all new to me and some of it may be family lore, as far as I know. I hate to keep throwing wood on the fire, but since she shared that, I thought I would pass it along.
Thanks so much for all your help.
Mike

I think Daniel and Alice died on the island. Alice possibly in 1840 and Daniel possibly in 1842. I think this is Daniel with his son Daniel on the 1841 IOM Census:-
1841
Ballavolley, Ballaugh, IOM
Daniel Corlett, Ag Lab, 50
Jane Corlett, 50
John Corlett, Ap Mason, 17
Jane Corlett 15
Daniel Corlett 10
Alice Corlett 5
Daniel Corlett, Ag Lab, 95
Note: There are at least 5 different Daniel Corlett's born in Ballaugh parish alone in the 1780s/1790s so be careful if you are researching Daniel baptised in Ballaugh 1788 son of Daniel & Alice. Here is one who died on the island:-
