Title: Wilson Surname
Post by: mbwilson49 on Wednesday 06 July 16 16:06 BST (UK)
I am trying to determine my Wilson origins. Through DNA, I have determined I am from the R1a haplogroup and have Scandinavian (most likely Viking) roots. I am distantly related (genetic distance 9) to a Benjamin Wilson born in 1637 Warwickshire, England. He immigrated to the Massachusetts area of America and died at sea abt. 1667. His father was Robert Wilson and his mother was Susan Ram. Some genealogy records indicate his ancestors may have been from Yorkshire. I am looking for evidence, to prove or disprove, my Wilson branch was from the Yorkshire area.

I can trace my Wilson branch back to South Carolina, USA, during the late 1700's.

Thanks,

Mike Wilson

How many markers did you test to and was it just Y-DNA you tested? I'm just wondering since that will make it easier for us to know how close a match it is, e.g. 28/37 or 102/111.

The Ram surname & it's derivatives originate in Essex. I can find only 1 in Warks. at the right time & he was called Rames.
The name Wilson is common all over the UK.
I can't see a marriage or a birth for Benjamin.
Where has the info come from ?

Benjamin may have married after immigrating to Mass. I believe his wife's name was Ann Fuller. I got this from various resources, including Ancestry.com. He also has a brother listed in some records as William.
I'm trying to ascertain if there's any substance with regard to parents.
