Title: 148 High Street Lanark
Post by: Miyam on Sunday 03 July 16 10:25 BST (UK)
Does anyone know what this place was?
I have found some of my ancestors here in 1841 census along with others of different surnames.
Thanks.

Sounds like a tenement type building

some lovely old maps of Lanark here
http://maps.nls.uk/towns/#lanark
The 1858 Ordinance Surveys don't show street numbers, but I'd be surprised if they went as high as 148. Is it possibly 14B on the census?

What was the name and occupation of your ancestor?

Is it High Street, Glasgow rather than the town of Lanark?

Miyam, are you using a transcription rather than the original of the Census?

Because many of the available transcriptions omit useful details like, for example, the name of the town or village. So an address in, say, Flowerhill Street, Airdrie, New Monkland will be transcribed as Flowerhill Street, New Monkland, because Airdrie is in a box at the top of the census page and they only transcribe what is in the address column on the left-hand-side of the page.

You need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and look at the original of that census to see exactly where it is talking about.

I wondered, if they were looking at the original rather than a transcription, whether the "148" referred to the Schedule No. entry in Column 1 rather than an entry in the address column?

Good points raised regarding transcriptions as "High St" is in almost every village & town across the country.

I cannot see a 148 High Street, Lanark in 1841. There is simply High Street, Lanark with no numbering.

However, there is 148 High Street, Glasgow College area, Lanarkshire. Wondered if there could be some confusion to do with that?

Miyam, can you give us some of the names of those you are looking at in 1841?

Monica

Could be. If Miyam would just tell us the the names of the people concerned, we could all have a look at it.

If it's high street Glasgow then I would say it was a tenement.

Sorry for the delay in replying...my PC died so limited access right now. Thank you for all the replies. Much appreciated.
I think it was an Edward Docherty I found there.
Hopefully back in action soon.
