Hi,
I am trying to find out more information about the current Hesketh Brothes Cycle shop in rock ferry 471 New Chester Rd, Birkenhead CH42 2AG
If anyone can supply me with any census returns of this building and its occupants I would really appreciate it! Im not too sure how old the building is so any help great.
many thanks

Try the 1939 register, I suggest.

It was there in 1901 -- just for starters.
Head was a Thomas C Telford aged 54 from Scotland. Occupation Cotton Warehouseman.
He had a wife Alice and 10 children at home at that point - children born Liverpool, then Bebington.
Also a Servant.

According to https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/ the house at that address was demolished between
1899 and 1912 1901 and 1911
You can see the 1899 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/333104/386683/12/100492
and the 1912 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/333104/386683/12/101234
471 is on the 1981-1982 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/333104/386683/13/100951

In 1891 - the Head was Robert Simpson aged 49 from Bromborough - a Coal Merchant? (hard to decipher) -- with 3 children and a niece.
I am not sure if town boundaries may have changed before 1891 as I can only see New Chester Rd in Bebington and other places, unless I'm missing something. Maybe someone else can see if they have better luck.

As I said the house at that address was demolished between 1899 and 1912

New Chester road is a very long road.

It is possible that the numbering system has been changed during the last 116 years. There has been a lot of redevelopment over the years.

471 New Chester Rd, Birkenhead CH42 2AG is on the 1981-1982 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/333104/386683/13/100951 and you can see this marked location on the earlier maps.
There is absolutely no doubt about the location.

In the 1911 census 467 to 475 were shops, 471 had a Herbert Hesketh, wife and two children, who was a Cycle Repairer, living above the shop. So the original houses were demolished after 1901 and before 1911, and shops built on the site.
