Looking to find my Aunt who I have never been able to trace ... only scanty information :
Lilian Wood .. born 1896 approximately .. at "The Willows", Poundswick, Northern Etchells, Cheadle, Cheshire .... then possibly at Gib Hill, Shrigley Park, Bollington, Macclesfield in 1919 & 12 Park Street, Bollington. Macclesfield in 1920.
She married James W Hewitt in 1914 and lived at 78, Church Road, Gatley in 1920..... thereafter no more information.
James was killed on the Somme in 1918,( remembered on the memorial at Gatley Green) along with Lilian's brothers, Harold and Ernest, all within 6 weeks and 25 miles of each other in France.
All were my Uncles and my Father, John, was much younger, missed WW1, survived WW2, and died in 1980. Have traced and visited all the graves in N. France.... but Lilian ??????
Any help would be appreciated.

The parish of Cheadle was in the Registration District of Stockport.
The parish of Northenden Etchells was in the Registration District of Altrincham.
So, these entries from FreeBMD look possibles?
September qtr 1895
Altrincham Registration District vol 8a, page 194
Wood, Lilian
December qtr 1895
Stockport Registration District vol 8a, page 2
Wood, Lilian Phylis
From GenUKI:
Northen Etchells (or Northenden Etchells) was a township in the ancient parishes of Northenden and Stockport, Bucklow hundred (SJ 8289), which became a civil parish in 1866.

Have you looked for Lilian and possible son James W Hewitt born Dec Qtr 1914 Stockport 8a 192 (mother's maiden name Wood) on the FindMyPast 1939 Register??

Thanks for those ... most of the links I have gone through to date without success ... NB Lilian was married to J W Hewitt ... he was not her son ...... I have a suspicion that she was buried / died in the Stockport area and it's that info I seek.

Kay is telling you there is a possible son of Lilian's marriage and has given you details of his birth registration. Have you looked in the 1939 Register?
-
I agree that you need to look at the 1939 register, don't dismiss the birth of a son James in 1914. Look for a widowed Lilian born 19 July 1895 with her son in Stockport.

Apologies to Kay ... misunderstood her posting.
Thanks
-
My fault - it was poorly expressed :)
If the birth date for Lilian that Jebber mentioned ( 19 July 1895) is correct then this death might be worth looking at - Lilian Hewitt Birth 19 July 1894 Death March 1976 Vol 6 Page 1351 - High Peak, Derbyshire. The day and month is the same although the year is one out.

There is a death that matches James the son - James William Hewitt, Q3 1998 in St Austell District.
David
P.S. Lilian appears on the Electoral Register in Gatley from 1919-1931

Thanks everyone ... going to check out on FindmyPast at local library this week.

Still struggling, I'm afraid .... checked out your good information on FindmyPast but (probably my fault) can't see any additional new info., other than " Chapel en le Frith".
I'm now really trying to find the burial place of Lillian Hewitt and have received some assistance from a new contact actually in Chapel en le Frith who has been checking Church Records ... so far no luck.
Can anyone throw any more light on this or where I might start an additional search to find this information ?

Would it be good to splash out on a will? https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

Died 27 Feb 1976
Administration Manchester 5 April

Gardener :
Thanks for that ... that info has absolutely shaken me rigid !!! .. apparently the address was an old workhouse at (not much) earlier times .. the will shows £1423 .. so ..... I must investigate further.
I'm very appreciative .. Safecontractor

So this post was correct for Lilian's death. :)
It might be worth ordering the death cert to find out more.

Rolnora ;
Thanks for your input ... perhaps you could advise me:
a). where I could obtain Death Cert and what new/ additional info might be on it and ...
b). another contact has emailed me about 1 hour ago to say that a check on grave headstones in local churches in Chapel en le Frith, has not revealed any name in the 70's that might be relevant. .... bear in mind some headstones were buried / flat when survey taken and are still possible contenders.
c). ... stumped again !!!
Thanks and regards - Safecontractor

Ollerset View is a Nursing Home in New Mills -- a few miles away from Chapel-en-le-Frith (but under the same Reg District) -- so she is possibly buried in a New Mills churchyard rather than Chapel
You can apply for the death certificate through the GRO -- it will give you the date & place of death and the informant - which may be a relative or it may be a nursing home official
I am Graveyard Steward for Chapel Methodist Church -- and she is definitely not buried there -- but I don't have access to the Parish Church records which has a much bigger graveyard
I also grew up in Gatley in the 50's & 60's -- there were still Hewitts in the village then -- i think they ran a TV/electric shop. I certainly went to school with a Hewitt girl. Have you tried seeing if there is still family in the area ?
-
Marmalady ;
Thanks for that ... isn't the world a small place ? ... I grew up in Benchill, Wythenshawe and went to the Tatton Cinema in Gatley ... also in the 50's & 60's.
Your information is very helpful .. but I feel that the Gatley connection isn't right . as my Father was the mysterious Lillian's brother ( also spending his early youth in Gatley himself,) he would have known of the Gatley connection.
The problem in tracing people is that the barriers come up with FindmyPast / Ancestry etc. etc. where detailed information always costs money ... usually payable before you know if the info is any good!!! Llibraries are helpful and I have had some good leads via Stockport Heritage Library, and I think they must be my next port of call to see their microfilm records.
Thanks for leads and I'll keep everyone posted .. perhaps others know something ??

My grandmother died in hospital in 1974. Her death certificate includes her date of birth, usual address, in place of occupation it has her deceased husband's name and occupation, then the informant's name, "qualification" = daughter, and her address.
So quite a lot of information but depends heavily on the informant I suspect. I don't recall my mother being present at the time of death. If anyone had asked me I would have said that she was phoned and went to the hospital, but I may be wrong about that.
A lot will depend on who was around to register the death.

Stockport Heritage have the registers in their archives
Ollersett View North Western Mental Hospital.... unfortunately the register of deaths only go up to 1974. ::)
They also hold the general register and the visitors book but ending in 1964 and 1961 respectively they're too early to be of much use to you either :(
It could still be worth sending an email or paying a visit, they might be able to tell you if and where any later registers are held.
-
Rolnora ;
Thanks again for that .. I presume you mean the Local Heritage Library on Wellington Road, Stockport.. already in touch with them and am just arranging visit ... do you have another Stockport Heritage and contact details ?
