The board is very quiet at the moment as there is a lack of work for our happy band of restorers and colourists. So come on Chatters...dig out your old photos and give us something to do ;)
Please post on a new thread in order that everyone gets to take a turn.
Thanks ;)

A coloured version from me

First and foremost, I must say that I never cease to wonder at the skills and talent of you wonderful restorers! Many of you have given me amazing help with my old family photos over the years.
So....there's a problem that I'd like to know your views on please. I have a wedding photo of my parents that I need to get some advice on before I can put it up for a restoration.
The photo itself is just a bit too big for my scanner, at 29.5 cm x 23.5 cm, also a little big for a standard frame, so I'm going to take it to my local Cartridge World to scan for me. I really some advice as to what the settings would need to be, to fit in with what resolution, etc etc, that a restorer would need, and of course the other important bit - what would fit within Rootschat photo size requirements.
I do have a newspaper cutting which describes really well my Mum's dress, including the veil and headpiece, and flowers, colours etc.
Unfortunately, in storage, some of the headpiece of her veil, and a wee bit of my Dad's head, has suffered over the years with a little mould, and someone (stupid me actually) years ago tried to gently wipe off it off with a damp cloth, with the result of course that there is a white splotch at the top. The rest of the photo is in pretty good shape, and shouldn't present any other huge problems.
Fortunately, I do have a group photo which clearly shows the detail in her headpiece, so can also get that bit cropped out for comparison, and post that as well - if that would be of help.
If you're willing to give it a go, could you please give me an outline of how it should be scanned, and how it can be reduced to be fit for posting in here, so I can give those scanning details to Cartridge World.
Thank you!
Jeanne 🌺

Nice restores everyone.
You need to scan it 600 dpi.
Although it won't look like it on your PC it will be the size of a poster but with a photo editing prog. you can reduce the physical size without affecting the resolution (dpi).
Your photo will also have a size in bytes, in your case it may be 10Mb. so you need to reduce the physical size to just under 500Kb. which is the max. allowed on here.
As the resolution will still be the same restorers can enlarge it themselves without the loss of quality.
-
Thanks Jim! You're a star 🌟🌟🌟
I'll print off your reply and give it to the Cartridge World guy, he's very good, so I expect that he will understand it, (which of course I don't) ??? ??? ???
Thanks again
Jeanne

This might help.

Thanks yet again Jim! Much appreciate your advice.

Got a problem with one of the scans. Just picked them up this morning, and the main one is 600kbs. So too big of course.
As the guy who did it for me is not there for another week, and I truly haven't got the skills to reduce it to 500kb for posting, without messing up the whole thing, is there someone please that I can perhaps email it to who would be prepared to reduce it to the required 500kbs for me.
The cropped one, which clearly shows the headpiece is fine, and is under the 500kb.
A big ask I know - but I'm too scared to touch it!
Thanks
Jeanne ???

Hello, is it possible to improve on a newspaper photo? This is the only photo my friend Margaret has of her Grandmother Lillian Lambert and her paramour and I was wondering if anyone could improve it please. Even if you could make it a bit lighter Margaret would be very appreciative.
Thankyou,
Marie
When I preview this post there is no photo attached so I hope it appears when I post. If it doesn't could someone please explain what I am doing wrong.
-
Lightened a bit....
-
Thank you Handy Pandy.
I'm sure Margaret will be very happy.
Marie

Is anyone else willing to have a try please?

Is there a better scan of this photo, its very dark - and hard to bring out any detail.
Thanks.

It will get more attention if you post this on a separate thread....you will need to rename the file though.

I nearly missed this one because it was attached to your thread Carol.

Hi, this is a poor copy / scan of a photograph I was sent of my Grandfather when he was a colliery blacksmith, if you wish you could do whatever you wish to try to make it better.
Many thanks as always for anything tried attempted or the usual miracles achieved ;)
Frank. :)

I didnt do much with it, I just remove that annoying "screen effect" you get from newspapers/photocopys. And made it a bit sharper/better contrast.
Cheers.

Wow!! :o That's brilliant, thank you so much relatedtoturnips, things are much more clearer now, many many thanks.

Thank you Trishanne (Pat :) ) that's really nice, he looks lovely, so much detail coming out.
I will take your advice and post as a new thread.
Thank you so much for your work and skill.

Raising this topic as the board has gone to sleep ;D ;D
Please start a new topic when you post a photo...300dpi is the ideal scan 600dpi for very small photos.

Hi Pat
Think it's this one

I did it by searching for Kempen on this board.

I wonder if the photo board has had it's day...only one post all day ??? In the 10 years that I have been restoring photos I have never seen the board so quiet.
If you have damaged photos that need repairing or colouring...Please help to keep the board going. As the saying goes "Use it, or lose it"
Carol

Just a blip, I'm sure.
It's a very popular part of Rootschat and I'm sure it will be busy again before long.
-
I hope you are right Mike as the restorers are bored with very little to do ::)
Carol
-
Fear not - I have a few more coming up, but they're still in packing boxes from my recent house move! I'll get to them soon! Can't have the amazing restorers sitting around being bored can we! ;D ;D

This request moved.

Hi Rena, Thanks for responding, could I ask you to start a new post with your photo as it may get overlooked here. I'm sure it will get the attention it deserves that way ;)

Here's the other B&W photo taken in April 1958. He worked on the land so he wasn't pasty faced as suggested by the photo.
I'd appreciate one of the photos coloured.
(This is where I bow, doff my cap, scrape the floor, kiss your boots and back out of the room gracefully)

I've got a blank look on my face - I responded from the Home page & thought I was on the board lol
-
You are on the right board Rena it's just that the restorers may not pick up the photos from this post if they have already read it, so you may be better off start a new topic with your requests...but don't worry about. He was a bit of a looker wasn't he ;D

Okay Carol, I've started a new topic and moved the first photo (with a different nomenclature) but it's not showing yet so I'll have to wait until the thread appears before I move the second photo.
Carol I was too busy looking into his eyes to notice anything else except he had a sense of humour and very considerate and kind. ;D He was 61 when he died in 1999; the hospital notes said "exhaustion" and as he was a workaholic it fitted.

Here's my effort, :)

Here are some colored ones, looking quite dapper. Note, I'm not truly satisfied with his mouth. As a male this would be the equivalent of me putting on lip-stick, so you could understand my struggle. Colors can be changed easily if they are too inaccurate or you are certain of another color, or just want to see him in a hot pink suit. :)

Just to keep the "fun" going:

Colouring in as well:

Excellent photograph! A quick trial to see what a little anisotropic smoothing will add to the result.

More fun..

Some fun for me as well!

dafydd46 + thanks for the addition to my vocabulary of anisotropic smoothing
I hadn't expected to see such a veritable avalanche of (wonderful) contributions and the "lipstick" looks great..
They're all beautiful and now that they're all so clear, I've just found myself chuntering that he didn't straighten his tie :D
As usual I'll print them all off to see what my printer makes of them.

Hi Rena...It should show soon but I think Sarah has been away so that might have delayed the moderation as I believe she is on her own on this site.

I appreciate your reply Carol.
I was wondering if my computer had played up again. Maybe not eh?

Hello Handypandy,
Thank you very much -I appreciate you spending time for me. Your choice of tie colour reminded me that he used to borrow his dad's bright maroon tie - anything to stand out in a crowd lol. Coincidentally when I clicked to view your post one of my sons looked over my shoulder and said; "He's got my green eye colouring". He's right, in that his dad from a distance had bright blue eye colouring which, of course, isn't obvious on a B&W photo.
I'll print it off with the others of course.

I have tried to lighten the face and sharpen it - I hope I haven't overdone it.

@Rena,
Apologies! For non-users of GIMP, I should have explained that anisotropic smoothing is provided as one of the tools in the G'MIC GIMP plug-in. Something which I am sure all users of this software will have added, as it provides many additional powerful tools.

Thanks dafyd46 - I'd already looked up the word and understood the explanation but don't ask me to repeat it as my tongue refuses to obey any command that my brain sends to it. :D
Whilst I'm here could I ask for a colouring of my OH Bryan (1937-1999) in this image which was taken in the very hot July 1966. I'll understand if it's not a suitable image. I'd like a blue shirt, blue tie and blue eyes please.
-
One from me....
-
Superb Handypandy - thank you so much.
I've furrowed my brow looking at that shirt because it looks white and the collar looks creased, but as his civvy street white shirts had detachable collars that couldn't crease because they were "Trubenized" I think he must have worn his blue work shirt. Even that puzzled me because I made sure they were starched to the hilt in order that they didn't crease during the day (and I wouldn't want him to have to scrub the latrine floor with a toothbrush again). Eventually I came around to thinking that he'd probably "borrowed" a shirt from somebody on camp. (whether they knew about it or not :D )
-
I would like one done but are we not supposed to ask for living people ? It is me when younger and the back of the photo has nearly peeled off.
So can I ask for that when it's me ?
-
I have a few photos for repair, now, do I put them on here or start a new thread?
-
A try for you:
New thread for each I would say

New thread would be easier for others to see/find. But this thread seems to be popular too.

Is there a alternative for uploading photos
As with my I phone it is a non starter.
Please😊
-
I'm not sure that you can but if you ask on the technical board someone might know.
Carol

Thank you so much for your time and expertise japeflakes and joy326.
It's amazing how a flat white face can be transformed into a semblance of 3D by colouring.

Please start a new post for your photos as they may get overlooked on this post which is now 10 pages long.
Thanks ~ Carol ;)
