I'm trying to find the mothers name of Louisa Alice Hiley. Her father was George Hiley.
Louisa was married to George Henry Learoyd on 14th May 1903
Any help will be much appreciated
-
Do you know Louisa's date and place of birth?
-
There are a couple of Louisa Hiley births on Freebmd. I've only had a quick look on the 1901 census so far and there are a couple of Louisa Hileys, so a bit more information is necessary.

1891 census shows mother as Mary

Louisa's birth certificate should give her mothers maiden name

Thank you both for your help. Your information makes sense. Its just that I had a photograph of Louisa's mother but with no name. Now I can complete my study. Thank you again

If you don't have access to a pay site for census familysearch is very good on some years ;)

I was just about to post that too Rosie and Heywood.
To be sure, you should probably buy the birth certificate as you should not assume that the woman that the father and children are living with is the mother of all, or any, of the children.
But yes, do as Rosie suggested and check the free sites first.

Thank you Rosie

Never use ancestry for certificates - purchase them from the GRO. (£9.25 to anywhere in the world)
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
There is a free site for looking up references http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Not sure why you are confused you will need to purchase the certificate I mentioned earlier for mothers maiden name

There is a marriage for a George Hiley age 20 to Sarah Ann Lambert in Bradford 3 Sept 1873. Occuption given as warehouseman and father named as George Hiley, cloth dresser (Sarah Ann's father as William Lambert, seaman).
The marriage of George Hiley to Mary Ann Haigh in Goole Oct 11th 1887 states he is a widower, has the same occupation of warehouseman and also names his father as George Hiley, cloth dresser.

Hi Stuckley1
Before purchasing any GRO certificates, -There are free public computer access to online Ancestry.com 'Free Library edition' at most main Town/City libraries for usually a couple of hours a day. If you live abroad ? like Australia, USA, Canada, or New Zealand - a lot of their main libraries will also have free access to Ancestry.com
Also a lot of main libraries are now getting free access to 'Find my past' website also.
When the time comes to buy a birth certificate, contact the appropriate local register office direct off line as they will ask you what you know about the birth to compare to their records first !! - this cuts the chances of getting the wrong certificate.
:)

I suspect a transcription error. Depending on the handwriting Laura and Louisa could be easily confused.
