Title: Battle of Jutland Royal Navy ships
Post by: anglokiwi on Friday 10 June 16 05:53 BST (UK)
i have my grandfathers royal navy records.  he has the medal from the battle of jutland.  on his records it has that he served on the RACER from april 1915 to undecipherable date in 1916.  he was then on the OSBORNE from april 1916 to sept 1919.  i am trying to find out how the OSBORNE was involved.  i can only find her as a royal yacht or maybe as a naval college.  his name is norman stroud and his service no. is 161786.  anyone with naval knowledge that can help?  thankyou

According to this website, neither the Racer or the Osborne were at Jutland.

HMS Racer became a tender ship for the Royal Navy College at Osborne Cowes when it moved there in 1903, then during 1916/17 was refitted as a salvage vessel.

Maybe the references are for service ON the Racer and AT Osborne?

Have a look at the criteria for award of the  Jutland medal,  it may give you an explanation.

There were 151 ships in the British Fleet at the battle. Here are the names: https://battleofjutlandcrewlists.miraheze.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jutland_Crew_Lists

There was no actual medal for the Battle of Jutland.  However, there was a medallion struck.

Presumably anybody could buy one?

Well that's something I didn't know.

My grandad was there on the destroyer Owl - Leading Seaman T H Osborne.

Thanks for this.
