Hi,
I am trying to trace my Ryan ancestry. Michael Ryan, born 1798 in Latteragh, his parents were Joannis and Margaritae Ryan, he married Honoria Kennedy (b. abt 1800) in abt 1818. They had 8 children. Michael, b.1824, Jermiah, b.1827, Martin, b.1830, John, b.1832, Bridget(Mary), b.1836, Patrick, b.1839, Ann, b.1841, Margaret, b.1842. They were all born in the Latteragh area. The 8 children arrived in Melbourne, Australia, in January 1854 but their parent Michael and Honoria were not with them. I am trying to find out what happened to their parents, why they didn't go with them to Australia. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I assume they died in the famine. Jeremiah was cousin not brother.
Honora is sometimes spelt Hannorah also.
Where did you find Michael's parents' names?
I am great-great granddaughter, can find no headstone inscription (in Tipperary) for Michael and Hannorah/Honora - have read them all online.
What is your relation?
Also, Michael's dates are 1819-1916, so parents must've married 1818 or 1819.

Hi Gig Ryan. It has been a couple of years since I put this post up and I have learnt a lot since then through research, talking with people and a trip to Tipperary. I am a great, great grandson of Michael and Honora Ryan. If you are interested in this Ryan family history, there has been a book written about them and their descendants called Tipperary Green to Victoria Gold, Ryans of Dookie, by Elizabeth McDonald. You can purchase it on line at: au.blurb.com/b/8345087-tipperary-green-to-victoria-gold. Brian Ryan

Hello Brian, thanks very much for link to book. Very interesting to discover that one daughter stayed behind in Ireland with her mother. I have also since found out that often those aged 30 or under received discount fare,so that might have helped those 7 get here - also explains why some ages don't seem to tally with other records.

My great grandfather was Denis Ryan born in Latteragh in 1863. He immigrated to US in 1884. His parents were John Ryan (b 1834) and Johanna Howard. I believe John's father was also named Denis (b 1798). The Ryan nickname was Seanin. I have been DNA connected to a gentleman from Australia who stated his Ryan from Latteragh was also Michael..same timeframe as your Michael. We had speculated that perhaps Michael and Denis were brothers as I believe their plots appear to be side by side in Griffiths Valuation maps. I know there was a family plot at Glenkeen in Borrisoleigh but not sure how far back that started. Denis (b 1798 approx.) was called Dinny Seanin and ran a pub called Halfway House around 1860's. The family in late 1800's ran the Latteragh Post Office and pub was now called Seanin's in 1900's. They lived not far from the Latteragh cross I believe. Same family? I bet it is. Is that book still available?

Hi Mary,
That is interesting. Your great grandfather Denis would probably have been first or second cousin of my great grandfather. I have looked through the Glenkeen grave listings, but none exactly correspond to ours. As for the DNA, the link is not surprising - many in Ireland would have similar DNA to us, their ancestors, especially those around the same area.
The link to book was posted - it is available as ebook, as well as print. Here's the link again. Some facts in this book are incorrect though, not sure why the author didn't contact the contemporary Ryans to check some things.

Hi Mary, also Michael Ryan was born 1819, and my great grandfather John Ryan (his brother) was born 1831, but all 7 (who came to Australia from that family) were born in Latteragh.
Their father Michael (who married Honora Kennedy) was born in 1798 I think.

Thanks so much Gig! I have ordered that book.
I also checked my prior communication with my DNA match and he is from Michael and Honoria Kennedy, then Michael b 1819, then John b 1831, then Bridget b 1881. I have many ancestors from different parts of Ireland and some others even in North Tipp.on my grandmother's side. But this DNA match shares other matches with me (2nd and 3rd cousins) along a clear and distinct family line of Ryan's from Latteragh. He matches my brother and I at 4th cousin level which is a strong match at high confidence level. I was excited to find him!
I was in touch with someone who was documenting all the stones at Glenkeen last year. He stated that he couldn't find these Ryan's there but that he confirmed they were there from a local descendant. He did stumble upon an area where a stone was laying on the ground and was hard to read and he had thought it could be theirs for some reason.
There was an article in the Nenagh Guardian around 1900 when the Ryans were renewing their pub license that stated the Ryan's had held a license there for 4 generations. Another article from the 1860's had a Michael Ryan working in the pub. A fairly common name...but who knows..maybe it was your Michael b 1798!

Hi Mary,
No doubt we are related then. My ancestors were farmers in Ireland, as were my Australian ancestors. I and some of my siblings have gone through all the gravestones at Latteragh, but none matched with ours, and neither do the Glenkeen ones. Now these are all online too.

Maybe the Ryans who ran pub were first or second cousins of my family. We had assumed that parents (Michael and Honor/Honoria) of those who came to Australia had died in famine, but Honora and one daughter Mary remained (she was married to Jeremiah Toohey and they had their own family by the time the other 7 left in 1853, arriving in Aust. 1854). There were terrible clearances around Latteragh and Toomevara (where Honora Kennedy was from) - over 500 tenants were evicted from Toomevara and many from Latteragh too, so very dire circumstances. Sending all their children away must have seemed like the only chance for a future. Michael would have died by 1853.
Your great great great grandfather Denis may have been Michael's (my great great grandfather's) cousin, they were born the same year.

Hi Mary. Your story is very interesting and yes we could be related because from memory Michael did have a brother who had a plot next to him. The book 'Tipperary Green to Victoria Gold' is still available at: au.blurb.com/b/8345087. I am sure that book could help you with some information. Let me know how you get on. Regards Brian

Hi Gig. I was just reading your post back to Mary about the book Tipperary Green to Victoria Gold and in it you said some of the facts were incorrect. If they are I am sure the author Elizabeth McDonald would love to hear from you so she could get the facts straight if you haven't already done that. Brian

Thank you both for your feedback! I did order the book! I'm sure we are all related! My Great grandfather Dennis here in the US settled in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY near the Canadian border. He had 5 children and 1 of them had 13 children, and another had 9. There are a huge number of descendants from them here on this side :)

Gig..I had added Jeremiah Toohey and Mary Ryan to my family tree a long time ago with question marks. Something made me think they were related. I just didn't know how and I cant remember where I found them even. Funny coincidence.

Hi
I am a researcher from Australia chasing a former Collingwood footballer. We already have David Ryan 1885-1957 but he had a brother Mick Ryan who played 1 game in 1908. I am trying to resolve whether "Mick" is Dave's brother Michael Joseph George Ryan 1882-1957 or another brother Matthew Joseph Ryan 1878-1924. These boys were all born at Dookie, Victoria and are all sons of Matthew Ryan 1840-1921 and Catherine (Kitty) McNamara 1850-1898.
I am unable to access the book "Tipperary Green to Victoria Gold" so if anyone is able to do a lookup, that would be most appreciated. A family contact in Australia would also be a godsend to contact.
Many thanks
Peter
