I'm fascinated by these 4000 restored photographs found in an attic in France taken during WW1. Gazing at the camera with their tired eyes, these soldiers had their picture taken and then presumably sent the photograph back to their loved ones. Who are they? Are they anyone's ancestor? What do the badges tell us about their regiments. What other clues are there? These are just a few of the many photos that survived. I hope one day someone will recognise a familiar face.

They are amazing Aren't they...if you google Lost Tommies The Mail Online....there are many more original photos and have been in national newspapers.

What incredible pictures, thank you for posting them - I hadn't seen them before - and also to Carol for pointing to more of them.
The restoration & addition of colour is fantastic, but I also found it a little unsettling as it absolutely brings home that these were ordinary men & boys, no different to our own husbands, sons, brothers etc.

Truly amazing. A wonder they survived to be found and restored....
A look back to a time which is fading in the memories of the younger generation, consigned to the history books. Finds like this are so important.

Amazing - The Open University transformed some black-and-white photographs taken in the WW1 trenches, coloured the images and they were published in the Mirror and other mags a few years ago. Nice to see restored old photographs, sometimes we see even more detail than the faded originals were showing us.
