Hi Annette

I have got back to my Father....Dennis James Oram, born 1st June 1922 - 1983, his Mother: Irene Florence G Smith (1886 - 1972) I think ?. and his Father James E Oram.

I believe he had a Sister Joan DP Oram

Then the trail goes cold.

Does this help?

Hi RogerO and welcome :)

Do you have the marriage - indexed on FreeBMD as follows?:

Sep qtr 1917

James E ORAM
Irene F G SMITH

Poplar 1c 773

The marriage certificate should give you the name and occupations of their respective fathers (plus names of witnesses).

Hi RogerJames, welcome to Rootschat.

We can give you all sorts of info, and make all sorts of guesses - educated and wild! - on your behalf, but a lot of the fun of doing the family tree is finding stuff out for yourself.

This does not mean, of course, that you shouldn't ask for help - that's what this site is about! But I hope you don't mind my saying that you sound as though you are probably still very early on in your ancestor hunt, and I wonder if the best help we can give you might be to point you in the direction of where/how to find out stuff - what do you think?

Do you know the freeBMD site that avm refers to?

www.freebmd.org.uk

not only will this give you names etc, but if you want to order any birth/marriage/death certs, you will need the reference numbers that this site will give you.

And speaking of cetificates, do you know where best to get those?

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/     ----- if you use any other site for ordering certificates, you will pay more than you need to.

Are you using any of the paying FH websites? If you haven't yet taken out a sub, it would be worthwhile seeing if you can get a free trial of Ancestry or Find My Past.

That's just the beginnings --- lots more there - but those would be a good start! Hope you don't mind me posting this, apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!

And of course RC is a brilliant source of help - but as I said, many of us find the fun is in working out the puzzles!

Irene Florence G Smith (1886 - 1972)

Her likely death registration is this one:

Irene Florence G Oram, Sep qtr 1970 Paddington - birthdate 25 July 1896.

It looks as though your aunt Joan was born on 27 January 1920 (birth registered in Mile End district) and died as Joan Daphne P HALL in Surrey in 2003.

The death of James Edward Oram (born 7 November 1889) was registered in Richmond upon Thames in 1979.

His school records (Laxon St School, Southwark, where he was enrolled on 3 July 1893) have his father's name as George; address 190 Long Lane.

I'd suggest you look up Joan D P HALL, born 1920, in the 1939 Register available on Findmypast (credits or subscription required) so as to double check the recorded birthdates for her parents and ensure that you are following the correct people.

I am suggesting you search for her as Hall rather than Oram as the latter may have been mistranscribed, and her married name will subsequently have been added to her entry.
