Hi
This is a long shot but need any help / ideas where to go to look. I am trying to help a friend locate her family that lived in Belfast Northern Ireland. Due to many circumstances over the years we have very little information to go on.
Any help pointing us in the right direction would be most appreciated.
Her father was William Davison b Belfast 05/03/1919 his mum was called Margaret and there were a lot of brothers/sisters (13) I believe? I remember the name John referred to not sure if it is a brother. She believes that Margaret died when William was a baby & his father died falling of a crane whilst working in Belfast docks. William therefore must have been the youngest as she thinks he possibly had 13 to 14 siblings!
William married only know the 1st name of his wife, Rachel they had 2 girls (who also moved to UK at a later date. Rachel could have died around 1967. The names of the 2 girls, her half sisters, as she would like to try and contact them.
Rachel remarried believing that William had been killed / not returning from the war.
He did return and the reason he moved to Bristol leaving his wife and 2 girls in Belfast. I have found his death records which confirms his DOB. He died Jul 1/4 1985 Bristol aged 66
We have found birth records 1919 Jan 1/4 Belfast - how ever am not able to find this when searching on GRONI :( not sure where I am going wrong. So not sure how to order the Birth cert which would tell us his parents names :)
She also knows William did some boxing have a very old photo of a trainer who was a midget? She also used to have a photo of him as goalkeeper for Glentoran Rovers with a big shield c1935 [may still have it some where]. I have tried looking for any websites for Glentoran FC but none listing players that played for them in 1935.
That is all the information we have not much to go on but never know :) any help pointing us in the right direction to look would be great
Thanks

Births less than 100 years old are not in GRONI's online database.
It will probably be easy enough to find most of the older children once we have the mother's maiden name.
William married only know the 1st name of his wife, Rachel they had 2 girls (who also moved to UK at a later date. Rachel could have died around 1967. The names of the 2 girls, her half sisters, as she would like to try and contact them.
Marriages less than 75 years old will not show up in the GRONI online database either and of course we're not allowed to post details of living people.
If mother died when William was a 'baby' then this is a possible death-
Margaret Davison, age 52, 5 Oct.1918 Belfast

K,
read your post.
Did a wee bit of digging and whilst not wanting to lead anyone up a blind alley, these are my thoughts..
I think the family are east Belfast, Newtownards Road area...my reasoning is based on my own maternal grandparents who lived in the same area, at the same time.
The bulk of the Glentoran players, at that time, were local.
Boxing was, and still is, a popular sport at the Oval (the Glen's home ground).
Ledley Hall is the nearest boxing club and has strong links in the area, and, I believe is at least 100 years old.
'Davison' is commonly misspelled 'Davidson' and vice versa here..along with many names..
This area of Belfast was a major residential area for the dock, the shipyard and associated engineering works since the late 1890's.
Therefore, I can find two matches on the 1901 and 1911 censuses which possibly will help your search..
1901 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Victoria/Wolff_Street/1219805/
1911 - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Victoria__part_of_/Wolff_Street/227062/
Note the surname change. I think William's mother may have been called 'Margaret Jane', but recorded as 'Jane' on the census returns.
Will do some further re burials etc and get back to you...
Hope this helps at this stage..

I had already disregarded the folk at reply # 4 as they don't fit with the story of William being the youngest of 14 children (George Davison and Maggie Hamilton only married in 1914, Maggie was about 20 years old).

Hi All
Thank you so much for your ideas. I had a look at the football website - it does say it has a list of player but sadly only one person is listed :(
aghadowey thank you - that will be the reason I am unable to find anything. Is there anywhere that we can look for marriage for William and Rachel? Totally understand that not able to post about living people
It looks as though all the info my friend has is a bit muddled but is right - just maybe the wrong people.
Birth cert info is
William born 05/03/1919 at Killips Place Holywood. Fathers name James Davison an iron turner. Mothers name: Madge Davison (nee Noble).
I am wondering if Madge was a shortened name for Margaret?
Now need to find when/ where James & Madge married. They must have moved to Holywood from Belfast at some point.
I am assuming that Madge and the Noble family may have come from the Belfast area as well.
David thank you I think you may have found the family - all your reasons fit in and make perfect sense :) After having a look at the censuses 1911 shows James 19 a turner iron and is right age as well.
This is what makes me think that the info is a bit mixed up with the wrong people but is right. James came from a large family living in the right area. She remembers the name John Davison - James has a brother John so this also fits in it could be him that my friend remembers. Also a name Aunty Cissie came up not sure which side she belongs too.
Think you are right Gaffy - looking at this William may not have been the youngest of so many children :-\
All confusing but becoming a little clearer.
Thank you once again - any help is very welcomed :)

Madge is certainly a nickname for Margaret but could also be used as the name on her birth certificate, etc.
James Davison, son of John, married 6 Apr.1914 Belfast, to Madge Noble, daughter of Thomas.
http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/fa3ff86588445
The marriage certificate should give an occupation for Madge's father which may help identify the family in 1911 and 1901 census, etc.
There is this Thomas Noble in 1911 with a daughter Margaret (one of 12 children) to keep in mind for the moment- if they are the correct family then the birthplaces could lead to some interesting research!

same family in 1901-

Think this is daughter Margaret with 2 siblings at a different address in 1901- 'Dasie@ probably is 'Daisy' another nickname for Margaret-

This family was posted earlier but looks like they might be a match as James Daivson was an iron turner and father's name was John-

and in 1901-

The original poster hasn't been logged in here since 2016 and was trying to find information from a friend so they may not respond to your post. The birth for William Davison (5 Mar.1919) is now online and shows the parents as James Davison & Madge Noble who have been mentioned in the replies here.

Many thanks for responding so quickly. I saw that the original post was back in 2016, so a reply was unlikely. I believe this Davison branch to be related to mine, so could have supplied some extra information. You are correct in the James Davison/Madge Noble as parents. Thanks again.

Just adding these elder siblings-

Wow Kiltaglassan, you have given me information that I didn't know. I knew about the two boys John and William Davison but did not know about older siblings Elizabeth and James. James Davison and Madge Noble married on the 6th April 1914 and it looks like she gave birth 2 days later, on the 8th April ! Second child, James, born around a year later in July 1915 in 11 Wolff St - this was where James's father was living at the time (James's mother died in June 1914 which is possibly why first child Elizabeth was born in Parker Street). I looked up the Street directory (Lennon & Wylie) and a William Noble was living at that address in Parker St - assume a brother of Madge. Many thanks for that information.

A James Davison, son of an already deceased James and Madge Davison, was initially reported missing then later reported as presumed dead. His aunt, Miss L Noble of 26 Parker Street, Belfast received the news. As reported in 1/1/1942 Belfast Telegraph, with picture of James. He was serving as a gunner in the Merchant Navy.

scotmum, thank you so much for that additional information. Well researched. My connection is the Davisons but, as James Davison was married to Madge Noble and there seemed to still be a lot of connections between James & Madge and the Nobles, this is all really helpful.
