Hello all
Could anyone please help me in tracing the parents of both Samuel Hodkin born 1749 in Elmton Derbyshire and his wife Ann Watkinson born 1754 in North Wingfield Derbyshire?
This couple were my 5 x great grandparents, but I am having difficulty in getting back to the previous generation.
Samuel Hodkin was a Farmer/Publican and his wife Ann Watkinson were married in Barlborough Derbyshire in 1775 and they had nine children.
They both died in Barlborough, Samuel in 1830 aged 81 and Ann in 1838 aged 84.
Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Can't help with parents as yet but there is a will on FindMyPast for a Samuel Hodkin dated 1844 - is this your Samuel's son?

The marriage at Barlborough is between Samuel Hodkin and Ann Witkinson- could be a transcription error, however FS has another marriage at Sutton cum Duckmanton(only a few miles away) between Samuel Hodkin and Ann Watkinson on 13 March 1775.
Probably irrelevant in the scheme of things, but thought I'd let you know :)

FS has a marriage between William Watkinson and Dorothy Ashkey in Ashover in 1753 which may be of interest

Thank you very much for the information, it is very much appreciated.
It looks as though the Will for Samuel Hodkin in 1844 is correct as Samuel Snr. did have a son Samuel. I will try and take a look at that information.
Thank you for confirming the parents of Ann Watkinson as being William and Dorothy, again I will follow that up.
Also the marriage of Samuel and Ann Watkinson was the correct one in Sutton cum Duckmanton and not Barlborough as I posted. Sorry, my mistake!!!

Samuel is proving to be elusive - I have found a baptism for Ann's sister

Baptism date: 4 April 1756
Parent(s): William and Dorothy WATKINSON
The rest of William and Dorothy's children appear to have been baptised at Sutton cum Duckmanton;
Mary - 13 Jun 1758
Dolly - 17 Aug 1760 (Daughter of William and "Dolly"
Rebecca - 7 Nov 1762
James - 2 Dec 1764
Lidy - 23 May 1767
William - 19 Nov 1769
Daniel - 26 Apr 1772

Sorry cant find anything for Samuel Snr either in Derbys or elsewhere in England.

Perhaps this is the burial of Dorothy Watkinson nee Ashkey?

Thanks everyone for your help in tracing the parents of Samuel Hodkin born 1749 in Elmton Derbyshire. As he died in 1830 in Barlborough I am beginning to wonder now if he had two Christian names and that is why no one can trace him.
He definitely existed as I am the living proof!!! Just joking folks and I will continue my search but appreciate your help as usual.

My husband is also a descendant of Samuel and Ann Hodkin 5 or 6x past. They were married in Sutton cum Duckmanton in 1775. I am having problems finding her birth however as there are different couples that could be her parents and I am not convinced that William and Dorothy were her parents. I am not sure how you access the church records to find out whether they are. Do you have any other records that can be checked? Also I have a different death date.
Can we compare notes?
