Title: Cowley of Amherst or Daisy Hill
Post by: Alex123 on Thursday 19 May 16 01:26 BST (UK)
I am hoping that someone may be able to help me please.

I have just found a connection with the Cowley family who moved from Gloucestershire England and made their way to Amherst and Daisy Hill.

If anyone has any information they would like to share, grave photographs or hints about the family I would love to hear from you.

I realise my request is very general and apologise for that but it is a new line for me.

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

June

Hi June

I did some research a number of years ago on 'The Cowley's' of Amherst.  One of my very best friends is a direct ancestor, but of course she doesn't know anything!!!

I just found a basic family tree I compiled on the Cowley's from Uley, Gloucestershire.  I dated it 1997.  How time flies...  :o

Possibly another connection, a 1918 wedding notice of a daughter of Mr & Mrs J. A. Cowley of a home/property named Daisy Hill in East Brunswick - possibly a nod to ancestors. Children appear to be Doris, Clara, Ernest and Albion.

EDIT: J A was Joseph Albion, son of Joseph Fisher COWLEY.

Ties in nicely to this chap:

The Ballarat Star, 19 Jul 1894
The death is announced of the oldest settler in the Amherst district—Mr Albion Cowley...76 years of age, arrived at what was subsequently known as Daisy Hill before gold was discovered, in 1849, and built the first hotel...
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/209216141

Albion was the son of Robert COWLEY and Sarah MORGAN (death reg 10778). His wife was Harriet HEAVEN(S). They married in South Australia on 10 Jun 1838 aged 18 and 20, having both arrived in SA in 1837 aboard 'Navarino'. Prior to coming to Victoria they were in Tasmania (then Van Diemens Land). They sailed from Launceston to Adelaide on 1 May 1846 aboard 'Henry' with their 3 children.

Daughter Caroline Ann was born in Adelaide on 5 May 1840. Harriet Eliza was born c1842 (she died in Victoria in 1854 aged 12). Son Robert Joseph was born 21 May 1845 in Port Sorrell district of Tasmania, father Albion COWLEY, farmer of Port Fenton, mother Harriet HEAVEN. They had another son named Albion George. Daughter Harriet Emily born in Amherst in 1855 (reg 11370); she married Robt Allan HENDERSON in 1879 (reg 854).

Harriet snr died in 1872 aged 53, born Gloucestershire, parents shown as Daniel HEARNE and Mary EVANS (reg 14).

Albion's brother Joseph Fisher COWLEY was also in SA (where he married Mary DIVERS in 1846) and then later settled in Amherst, Vic. He died in Vic in 1879 aged 55 (reg 3472).

Another brother, Daniel COWLEY, married in Victoria in 1856 (to Margt McSWEENEY, reg 2119) and lived in Amherst; he died in Vic in 1912 (reg 14469).

EDIT - arrival in SA of whole family: in 1840 on Charles Kerr from London

Likely death for eldest son Robert in Feb 1847 aged 24/25.
Daughter Caroline died Vic 1912 - see http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/91576416)

Thomas stayed in SA and died aged 90. Photos of him in these articles as well as info about his father Robert:

Thank you for the reply Bitzar.

Rosball thank you for the links I will enjoy checking them out. - The time frame is from about 1850 onwards.

Mollipops thank you for your information. The names you mention are definitely from the family I am after because I notice the name Albion and the surname Sarah Morgan. These were two of the names I found in my tree and it was on checking what I could find of them that I found they had moved to Australia.

Hopefully I will be able to help someone else some time.

Kind regards - June

This is quite a large family.  Some stayed in Adelaide, some came to Victoria to Amherst and onto the Cobden/Camperdown area and Cowley's Creek.

The only surviving headstone at Daisy Hill.

I wish I was that lucky to know that mine were there!

Amherst Cemetery is a couple of km's away.  There are more Cowley's there.

Thank you Bitzar. It's amazing that I have found one family line with some information about them. The majority of my lines - especially the main ones - were I think, hiding under stones at every census, possible family gathering or at any time anyone was keeping records of anything.

But that's the thrill of the chase and makes it even more of a thrill when something is found.

Oh and I should add that Harriet is my 3rd cousin 3 times removed. Not a close relationship - but a relationship nevertheless.

Kind regards - June

June you  may like to have a peep at all the free links on the Resources board which would many of the links posted on the thread.

I have many South Australian resources but need to reinstall the drivers on a new PC...enough angst just getting my accountancy and other programmes functioning....joys of living in the bush and relying a tech 300 kms away to do the right thing. >:( >:(  Hate new PC's ::)

This is from the Biographical Index of South Australians which was compiled from research by the SAGHS now SAGenealogy from information in archives, public records, private papers and letters of administrations as well as contributions from individuals.  Published in 1986.  An excellent resource to start your South Australian research however the information is not always accurate.  Bear in mind that this was an enormous undertaking and of course they didn't have the internet to search for information at the click of a mouse.

This would be contributed information.

Lots of Victorian wills listed here for COWLEY, including a Robert and 3x Albion
Many wills earlier than 1926 are available on-line and often give very good family information.

My OH has a very, very distant link to Robert via his son Thomas and the only information I have can be found in the public arena.

I think the Cowley's owned/ran a number, well possibly more than one, hotel's/pub's in Amherst in the early days.  Even into the 1900's I think they may of still been in hotels in opposition to the Gane family, my connection, kind of.  I could be wrong Cando, my memory is fading!

But something that might not be in the Cowley public domain...

Henry Cowley Daniel BURGE
father:
mother: Rose BURGE
birth: 1878 Amherst
reg: 12909

Henry Cowley Daniel BURGE
father:
mother: Rose BURGE
death place: Talbot
age: 20
year: 1898
reg: 9975

I know we don't assume  :-X , because we know what that is, but what do you reckon, Daniel Cowley as father?!

Rose is the d/of Thomas Burge and Elizabeth Lane so that's not where Cowley comes into it either!

I did a lot of research on Amherst back in the late 1970's when trying to help someone in Yorkshire find out what happened to her three Great Uncles named 'Willis'.   I spent hours in the State Library in Melbourne and I soon discovered that although William Willis was living in Amherst most of the social activity all took place at the larger nearby town of Talbot.   For example this extract from the Talbot Advertiser of that time:
"Recitations by William Willis in Talbot 11th August, 1868   -
“The fifth of the present series of popular entertainments in Talbot was held on Friday evening at the Odd-Fellows Hall and passed off in a very satisfactory manner.  Early in the evening the Talbot Brass Band paraded the town playing several popular airs of which three were given in front of the Hall in first rate style.   The proceedings commenced at 8 o’clock.....it was proposed that Mr. James Fowler take the chair.”   Then followed a long list, 21 items in all, by various Talbot citizens.   For example”

Harrisons Private Band – Settlers March
Song   -  “Man the Life Boat” by Mr. Murphy
“Linktum Gun Boat”  by Mr. Murphy
Recitation  -  “The Sea Captain”  by Mrs. Scott
Song – “Tramp, Tramp, Tramp”  - Mr. Anketell
SONG IN CHARACTER – “THE MAN THAT COULDN’T GET WARM” ...BY   MR. WILLIS
Dialogue  “Brutus & Cassius”   by Messrs Scott & Evans.

The programme ended up with the National Anthem, encores for Mr. Murphy, and announced takings of 7 pounds.
Further on a small report -  “The Committee of management of the Talbot Popular Readings held a meeting on Tuesday evening at the Commercial Hotel,  Messrs. Fitzsymons, (in the chair), Fowler, WILLIS, Dunlop, .... present.....”

On August 25th, 1868 the paper reported the 6th & last of the series of Talbot Popular Entertainments.  Again a full list including”

Solo on the bagpipe....”Flowers of the Forest” by Mr. McLeod in full Highland costume.
RECITATION – “THE LAST TEAR I SHED”   BY MR. WILLIS
“Wee wee German Lairdie” and “The Heather Hills” by Mr. McLeod.
“Young Lochinvar” a recitation by Mr. Fowler.
“The Brave Sir Colin”  and  “Scotland Yet” by Mr.McLeod
Song   “The Braw Wooer” by Mrs. Douglas
Duet  “Huntingtower” by Mrs. Douglas and Mr. McLeod.

At the end of this evening Mr.Fowler proposed a vote of thanks....”although a Scotchman himself, he considered the programme on the present occasion contained too much of the Scottish element, and hoped next time English and Irish elements would be more noticeable.  The motion was briefly seconded by MR. WILLIS’    Takings  11 pounds 5 shillings.”

I did take a run out to Amherst and could only find three old weatherboard homes still standing.  Amongst the trees there were mounds everywhere where prospectors were hunting for gold.   Soon found out where everyone had gone - the very large Amherst Cemetery in a lonely field on the road back to Talbot.    Took the odd photo.
