Title: Matthew McElroy
Post by: Jan Prit on Saturday 14 May 16 09:28 BST (UK)
Hello, saved this death registration transcription of Mathew McElroy thinking it was my ancestor who came from Louth Dundalk, his wife is a Alice Weir, they married in Ireland lived about 40 years in NSW colony, place of birth just Ireland, his profession a Cooper the same as my ancestor Mathew. Children of this marriage Charles 45years, Mary Jane 41years,Eliza 40years, Alicia 37years. Wonder if my ancestor Mathew McElroy went back to Ireland perhaps after wife Sarah passed on, and then he married Alice Weir and came back to Australia the year of birth around 1794 very close. :-[

Difficult to help without knowing when this Matthew McElroy died so that we can work out approx. date for marriage :-\

Civil registration of Catholic marriages began 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic ones) so before those dates you'd need to see if a church record survives.

there are several Weirs and McElroys in Co Tyrone but not in this parish

1796
Flax Growers Of Ireland
http://www.failteromhat.com/flax/tyrone.php
the nearest was
M'Elree             Michael               Drumragh               Tyrone
M'Elree             Widow                 Drumragh               Tyrone

1830

McIlroy, Chas.   T: Cavanaca Upper Y: 1830
Weir not found

Griffiths valuation some 30 years later for the same parish has neither name

if Charles was the father of Matthew and a grandchild also of the same name you might be in luck, proving will be difficult.

the originals of tithe-applotment-books are in Belfast at the PRONI. access is limitedto visitors only or paid researchers etc. the information is very limited see the 26 counties tithes at the the national archives http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  and try a few surnames
good luck

Trying to find my ancestor Matthew McElroy from Dundalk Louth, 1794 bap, in 1828 Census with Sarah wife and daughter Maryann aged 7, what is the best way to search for both their burial dates if stayed in N.S.W. or their immigration dates if they went back to Ireland, very confused and lost. :'(

Why do you think Matthew & family might have returned to Ireland? It's far more likely they stayed in Australia or even moved to New Zealand. Have you checked online newspapers for details like obituaries or death notices? Searched for deaths in each area of Australia (N.S.W., Victoria, etc.) and then N.Z.?

I see that you've an earlier topic looking for 'Matthew' in Co. Louth but you haven't meantioned here that he was a convict (therefore probably more unlikely to return) and also known as Michael.

Another topic also on Louth board-

I am trying to find the 1841 or later Census in N.S.W. Australia for Matthew McElroy the one that married Alice Weir in Ireland, I tried on Ancestry and the other Matthew comes up all the time in 1828 with Sarah and MaryAnn, having no luck with this family. :'(

N.S.W.
Since 1841, no census survives. A number from the last century were lost in a major fire, and none from this century has been retained, apparently for reasons of protection of privacy, and a fear that failure to do so would put the accuracy of the census in doubt.

Did you read the bit I quoted for N.S.W.?

You don't seem to be reading what I posted correctly  :-\

No N.S.W. census 1841 onward is available- some lost in a fire, others more recent because of privacy reasons will not be released.

Hello, I will post again what I have on Matthew McElroy & Alice Weir.

Matthew McElroy aged 30 & Alice Weir (also known as Alicia) “Mcilroy or McAlroy or McAhoy” arrived on the 1st free immigrant ship to the Australian Colonies (known as Bounty System immigrants), arriving on the vessel “Adam Lodge” in 1837 from Londonderry, Ireland to Port Jackson. The passenger list selected families specifically for their trade skills.
The Family were Catholic’s from Tyrone County Ireland.
Matthew & Alice Weir were listed as married 10th Aug 1828 in Omagh- Drumragh Parish- Tyrone, Northern Ireland.... I suspect they were town dwellers living somewhere around High St.
They may have left with 4 small children...a son Matthew aged 14 months died the day they arrived in Port Jackson after a 106 sea day journey. Sarah (died unmarried in 1861 aged 28 ) Mary Jane (unknown- was living unmarried in the Rocks, Sydney in 1852)
The youngest daughter Elizabeth (may have married Frederick Wilson in 1865, 7 children).
Charles McElroy was born about 1840, the only male to survive out of 3 boys.
The family may have 1st lived at Surry Hills, then later to Pitt St, then to James st off South Head Rd (now known as Foley St Darlinghurst at Taylors Square) by 1852.
Matthew McElroy died 11th May 1878 living in Albert st Paddington aged 78 Years old.
A curiosity is Matthews death certificate has his children ages all over the place !

However I did note in research on Trove Newspapers there was a link to a unrelated McElroy Family to mine with a Sarah living at Surry Hills..(a death notice I think, to long ago to recall but it is there).

Thank you for that information.

It appears then that the death info on ancestry.com.au for the Matthew McElroy in my family (born in Ireland in about 1784, married to Sarah McGoveran, father to Mary Ann) is incorrect. Or else he also died in Paddington the same year your Matthew McElroy died... Which of course seems unlikely. I will have to find out if there was a reference for that. I don’t recall seeing a death notice or cert. thanks again.
(Matthew and Sarah McElroy are my 5th great grandparents)

Thanks. I’m going to remove the details that have been added on acestory.com.au I don’t know who added them but they clearly aren’t correct.

Morning mchadwick great that you are connected to Mathew and Sarah, they are very hard to find, so many entries on Ancestry are wrong and won't correct their mistakes. I am trying to complete my ancestors at the moment but its hard with one good eye and very tiring, now the computer is playing up. Keep in touch. :-[
