HI,

There are no Central registries/indexes in Canada for BMDs.  Canada has very strict privacy laws and each province imposes its own even further.  Additionally, some provinces are more research friendly than others so researching in Canada can be challenging.  As a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago (They are up to about 1931 ish at the moment) and deaths 70 years ago.

Did Joseph have a middle name which might distinguish him from others ?

Hi Fifers,

I would contact the Winnipeg Public Library and get them to do a lookup in the city directory for your ancestor for 1985 (last known date) and forward to get a death date estimate. The Canadian find a grave site might help you out as well - there are a number of cemeteries in Winnipeg, MB

Hope this helps,

JDC

You may get also get some assistance on the Manitoba Genealogical Soc. Page on Facebook.

I've recently had assistance from the Quebec FHC on Facebook, one of their volunteers took some photos for me at a cemetery in Montreal.  (I'd been waiting for a findagrave request for about 3 years!)

Worth a shot!

The library found at this site holds many Manitoba newspaper archives.

Note there is an ask a librarian button on the home page, suggest you try this.  Assume the library only open during normal weekday hours.
